What does everyone think about Curbishley retiring? It's highly coincidental that he resigned 2 days after Scolari turning down the England job :p. I reckon it's 95% he's the next England manager.
If he doesnt go there, i think that Newcastle is the only other job he would go to. I think he would be a great manager for england though. Just look what he did with charlton with limited resources.
Opinions?
I'm also pretty sure he will get the job. He is a good manager, the only problem is the lack of european experience.

Yeah thats the only problem. The other 3 managers in the running all have european experience, but I'm wondering if Curbs knows something we don't. He wouldn't resign unless he had another job lined up.Quote:

Was listening to 5 Live today and they were saying they were 90% sure Curbishley would get the job...but seeing how the FA have dealt with the situation this could always change!
Hmmm im not sure... He said in an interview after his final Charlton game that he wanted a break cus he had never had one since he started as he went straight into management.
I think McClaren will get it now.

We need root and branch reform of the FA starting with the commitee who select the England manager along with a proper stratedgy for dealing with the press (or not dealing with them as the case maybe) instead we will be left with a lame duck who will be about as ineffectual as Graham Taylorand very little will change. (Shame on you Trevor Brooking! - the one person whom I respect and who could do a good job given the correct position and chance)
P.S. The FA should also implement an "approved boot design program" - no professional player should be allowed to wear the crappy slippers that pass for boots these days (unless they like to have their metatarsals broken) and the number of Premiership games should be severely reduced by say 10-15% in a season. Only then will England have players fit enough at the end of a season to compete in a WC.
Ooops - sorry, that turned into a bit of a rant but it's so frustrating to see a complete balls up made when one man with half a brain (i.e. me) can work it out.

I would personally like to see Martin O Neil, hed definately inject a bit of passion.
I'd go with McClaren myself, boro have been on top form lately and its his doing.
Curbishly, fair enough hes a legend, but his team have only been in the prem a year or 2, although its top flight surely it wont be the same as managing 25 of the worlds best players.
Personally, if they went for scolari... the none english option, I have no idea why they didnt ask Arsene Wenger... probably the best man for the job (Shame hes not english, but hes been over here long enough :p )
I rate Scolari as a coach and his better prospect than Steve Mclaren lol.
Give Curbishly 2-3yrs and by then he will be ready to step up to plate. His worked wonders with Charlton. Newcastle have a manager in mind and it's not Curbishly so I have been told.
Yes, the very same Steve Mclaren that sat on the sidelines and did nothing during Englands defeat to Brazil. No word in Svens ear, no shouting team orders when it was obvious that the team were playing too deep. No bottle to tell Sven not to play unfit players. Yeah right. I'm sorry but at the moment Mclaren does not have what it takes to take on the England job. Boro have fluked their way to the Uefa final. Yes Wenger would be an excellent choice but I think it would be asking alot to prise him away from Arsenal when they are moving to a new ground this year.

Tactically the best out of the bunch of 4 "left" in the running (I say left, these are the names leaked to the press, O'Neill, McClaren, Allardyce, Curbishley - I doubt there's any more surprises as the FA are too incompetent to keep anything secret) O'Neill is streets ahead of the rest.
McClaren has got lucky getting to the UEFA Cup final, he was forced into fielding 4 very good strikers due to the situation, and their opponents bottled it - twice. When it comes to Premiership matches they have come good against the best teams in the league, but this is to be expected given the quality of some of their players. Week in week out, they have been much worse than a team of their quality should be. Though, McClaren has had experience of the England unit, and will probably take the shortest time to gel into the system.
Big "Sam" Allardyce. What a great England manager he could be. Why don't we get rid of our midfield altogether and just play Crouch up front and have long balls played over the top game after game? That would present an interesting problem for defenders shorter than 7', but really is that what we want to see when we have such a great calibre in midfield?
Curbishley has done a great job at Charlton. Now why doesn't he just go to Newcastle and forget that a season lasts more than 3 months again, only to leave them in more of a mess than they were in under Souness.
The FA are useless. They mess up Wembley stadium by changing plans and being generally very slow, then they try to look decisive and get a manager in BEFORE the World Cup?? This is the most rediculous thing possible, for several reasons.
One is that it presents the problem that they have to decide whether to bring the manager to Germany or not, to be with the players and see how it is structured. If he goes then it will be uncomfortable and the press will have a field day. If he doesn't go then he won't have much time to assess the situation before the Euro 2008 Qualifiers in the autumn.
The 2nd is that its been a huge distraction to all parties involved in the end of season run in. If any of the managers can say it hasn't been a distraction and caused problems in their clubs is lying - the clubs don't know whether their manager will be there come next season, the players don't know either, and the managers can't concentrate on their job.
The 3rd is that they have limited the number of candidates to, basically, English managers managing in England. Only Scolari and Hiddink have been considered from abroad, and of the two, only Hiddink has decided that he is to talk about decisions before the World Cup. Now the FA have chose a manager, he has said I want to wait until after the World Cup, the press have gone mad as they believe he is to sign very soon, and then he decides against it. How clever is that, Barwick?
And how many of the "panel" have actually played football? None. What is the Arsenal chairman doing if he is not a member of the committee? Making sure Arsene Wenger isn't selected I've no doubt. Why isn't a respected ex-footballer forming part of the panel, someone that is part of the FA already, say Trevor Brooking?
Its a real mess, and I do honestly think that the panel members should step down and the whole process be started again, right from the beginning - clean slates and all that. There is no rush yet, the England side picks itself almost, and the first competitive match for the next manager will be in September, so there is plenty of time for a successor to be chosen.
I'm going to be very interested as to how Sven performs this year at the World Cup. For the first time in 2 years the team hasn't picked itself, with Rooney probably out for the duration. Now he's actually going to have to show some tactical nouse and make himself worth the ridiculous £4.7million he gets per year.
I've got as much passion for the game than "Big Sam" (as do alot of footie fans) so why are you not nominating me for the post? I'll tell ya why - cos I have no experience of leading players at the required level and whilst my tactical nouse is pretty damn good (if I do say so myself - congrats self, pat on the back) it's not good enough at international level, nor is Alladyce's. We would have the same level of success with a Bolton style of play at International level as we did with a Watford style of play under Taylor. Most of Bolton's success has been due to physical aspects and the new physical training methods that Alladyce has put in place (for which he should get full credit) and he is certainly able to motivate, however, that is not required at England level. You cannot extrapolate a managers success with a mediocre side into success with England, it is a totally different ball game (sorry no pun intended).Quote:

I do think that we have some good English coaches in this country and I would love for all of them to succeed. I agree with all luke313's points especially the bit about explayers and Trevor Brooking. I also think that there should be advice/input fro previous successful England managers.
I don't agree with this part. Big Sam is tactically aware and when he took over Bolton he played to Boltons strengths. Bolton are a very phsyical team with the likes of Davies and Nolan strong in the air. If you have good players who are strong at a particular part of there game, you will play to the strengths of your players. This is exactly what he has done. He bought the Greek bloke Giannokopolus[sp?] and Jay Jay Okocha in to supply accurate balls to the strikers.Quote:

Personally, I'm glad Scolari has turned down our offer. Has he managed in England before? How aware is he of English players? What he reads in the media?? If so, why not forget the England manager position and get all the sports editors to agree on a football team. After all, the media are either love / hate.
I think 2nd in my list would be O' Neill. Yes I am a Forest fan and he had good success with Forest at the highest club level which gave him valuable experience.
Look at his career as manager. Promoted Wycombe Wanderers in consecutive seasons on limited funds. He took Leicester City to League Cup glory at least once, and had a bit of a cup run in Europe. Surely these were down to motivation? He had no money to buy players, so he got the players he had and made them better players. Exactly what an national coach should be doing. He then went to Celtic where Rangers were dominant in domestic competitons. He spent a bit of cash and then won the SPL twice IIRC. Wherever he's been he's had success, whether that's during his playing or managerial career.
Unfortunately for Martin, I've heard that he blown his interview with the FA. Apparently he went in to his interview and told the FA how it would be run and how he would want to do it, similar to how Brian Clough was never offered the job as he is of a similar mould.
The FA didn't like this and now it looks like it's either Curbishley or McClaren. Neither of which I'd really want as our countries manager.
McClaren certainly has the committment i remember once he was mistaken for the england manager by a foreign reporter for his enthusasim on the line till the reporter ws told it was sven !!.
personally i would like to have seen Martin o Neil have a crack a bit more euro knowledge and good tachtician.
if McClaren is the one hope the press get of his case as they do more harm to Englands chances than anyone.if they stop scandalising and sensationlising everything and SUPPORT the national team it would help.
You can't deny though, he's taken the 2nd lowest budget in the league and is currently residing well up the table. The lowest team is Southampton, and look where they are currently. I belive Alladyce has a lot of qualities that Sven doesn't. For Example, watch most England matches and Sven will just sit there, for 90 minutes. I agree fully on the thoughts that the best managers are Ex Players. They know more about the game then someone who just "took the course." In the next few years I can see people like Shearer becoming a manager, and probobly a good one. I'm not saying we should nominate him, but I'm just making a point.
Bascially, as said above the FA as about as useful as an Ashtray on a motorbike, and so will more than likley pick someone that no-one likes anyway, but I'd like to think that we at least get someone semi-decent at the job, which I belive Alladyce is more than semi-decent.

They've gone for the safe option. Martin O neil or Big Sam would have been great but they'd argue to much. The FA want someone who won't answer back.
So that's why Scolari turned down England - he was holding out for the Boro job... :lol:
