    Davinci Code...the anti-christ on film?

I usually tend to stay away from political, religious and all topis that tend to 'hit a nerve' as much as possible but I find it interesting as to how people are starting to perceive this movie. I'm sure most of you have read the book (at least those of you that reply here) but many people have emailed me saying that the Davinci Code, is just trying to discredit the bible and add more confusion...what do you think?

I plan to watch it from an entirely 'entertainment' point of view like constantine, i.e. take everything you see as a grain of salt...I believe in science and I believe in mankinds nature of labelling all things incomprehensible as 'the work of God'..but I do believe that there is a higher power out there...and I guess a fairly christian upbringing (my mom's a fanatic heh) has rubbed off on me but I don't have time to go running to church every Sunday...

Pleaser, remember this is a friendly discussion and I don't want this to turn into a 'heated' debate..just your opinions will do...life's too short to brawl over such things

I think even Dan Brown stated somewhere the book is fictional ? Which means it's speculation from known facts but what mentioned in there might no be true. The book is a good reading (entertainment wise) and hopfully the film.

And about discrediting the Bible, i personally dont think the Bible is reliable in the first place (historically, minus the magic bit from it), bent and twisted through all the years by politics and power, etc...

Opus Dei (the group fictionally portrayed in the book as masterminding a coverup within the catholic church) wanted a disclaimer shown at the start of the film saying that it was entirely a work of fiction and that any similarities between it and real events is purely coincidental. Dan Brown turned round and said that Spy movies (which have a lot more in common with reality that the DaVinci Code) do not require them, so why should it?

At the end of the day (despite being a practicing Christian (CofE if anyone is vaguely interested) I still enjoy it as a work of FICTION, as it was intended. If the church believes this film is a threat then they are misguided or insecure, the choice of which I leave up to them. BTW, as far as I know, the only groups to have voiced serious concerns over this film have been Roman Catholics, where as the protestant groups have been more open minded/tolerant (again I leave the choice of term to them)

I'll definetley go and see it, having read the book about 2 months ago - I found it enjoyable, and thought provoking although that doesn't mean I took it all as truth, I was told portions of it wasn't.

I personally don't see why theres a problem with the book/film being made, if people aren't comfortable with the subject matter, then fine - but I think it'll entertain/interest a lot of people, so i've no objections to it.

    Cheers,
    David

Personally, I'm not "happy" with the film, as it grossly misrepresents Jesus (in the same way as I would not be happy with a film saying that my Dad is a lying cheating scumbag, when he is not, regardless of how "good" a film it is). The biggest problem is that, whilst Dan Brown admits the modern-day storyline is fictional, he has tried to claim that the historical details (artwork, architecture and documents) are true fact.

Having said that, the whole Da Vinci phenomenon has prompted lots of people to investigate the historical nature of the gospel accounts for themselves, which is a good thing. And Hans (don't mean to pick on you, you are just the first to express this opinion), if you were to investigate yourself, you would find that the gospel accounts of Jesus' life (in particular) are far far more historically accurate (by any scale on which you can measure these things) than any other writing of equivalent age - so we can check that they haven't been
twisted through all the years by politics and power, etc.

from what i understand of the bible is that it was written years after the event actually happened meaning some of it would be come twisted and incorrect, im also interested in how they can check that this book is historically accurate as theres no one living today that was around lol

Dude, the Bible isnt about 1 event, and its not as if each part was written ages after its 'event'. The Bible was written by God, He wrote it through people in exactly the way he intended.

Im not big on books so will prob watch the film, not completely sure what its about but im not worried this book or film is not gonna dent my faith, or any of my friends'.

It does actually say near the beginning "All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents and secret rituals in this novel are accurate" I guess thats not saying the ideas in the book are true but still if he says the rituals are true, hes surely also saying the Priory Of Sion are real, hence their goal is real? Im just guessing.

I guess i actually want the book to be true, but then again im an Athiest and i cant (even if i wanted too) make myself believe that just because someone tells me a book is true, i'll believe it, especially if it doesn't follow the rules of Science, but thats just my view, i dont have a problem with others believing it. Anyway i thought the the book was one of the best ive ever written (perhaps as i said, because i wanted it to be true) and will definitely see the film! Although have you seen who's playing Silas? Thats not really how i imagined him, i thought of him as being a lot bigger and muscluar than that.

Well, it's fiction, based on stupid ideas and made into some conspiricy by people who are just as stupid.

Can't stand it myself. I've got nothing wrong with rubbish fiction in and off itself, but for so many people to take it seriously, is rediculous.

The Bible does a pretty good job of that itself
The amount of contradictions is amazing.
You have the fact that there are differences in the first and second testament.
Then you have all the errors and differences when its been translated from one language to another.

i just find it strange how a few months ago it was foolhardy and 'deliberatly offensive' for cartoonists to caricature Mohammed (including some people on this forum) but the same people are not up in arms about this...

If the film is anything like the book its a rather dreary love story underneath it all , set again a fictional background. Just like Dan Brown's other books.

Dude, it, like, totally was. Do some research - for example, the various Gospels were written at all sorts of odd times and some were omitted entirely. The story surrounding the gospel of Judas for example is pretty amazing.
