First drought order for 11 years

A drought order has been granted in England and Wales for the first time since 1995, banning the non-essential use of water.

Under the six-month order, Sutton and East Surrey Water can ban car washing, the filling of swimming pools and watering of parks and sports grounds
Okay kids - this summer no going outside or to the pool - you must stay in watch tv, and get fat...

for those that are affected, cleaning bikes is still ok as far as im aware, as regular cleaning is required to keep in good working order, and therefore is a health and safety issue, at least that was the case under the previous hosepipe ban. tbh though, it seems ridiculous customers are being penalised when water companies loose so much to leakage

If someone wants to dig an irrigation channel from Manchester, they're more than welcome to take some of our rain.

A lot of these are enclosed systems, so I don't see how they should be banned........

Am I right in thinking that this only affects those who use water companies who impose a ban, in this case Sutton and East Surrey Water, not everyone?

For the moment, yes. Sutton and East Surrey Water only covers a fairly small area, so it won't affect that many people.

However, Thames water has also been advised to impose similar measures, and they serve millions of people. Thames water BTW where seen jetwashing their large HQ building a few weeks ago.

They way I see it, if restrictions are imposed, the water companies have failed in their basic duty, for one thing, I don't think that they should be allowed to make a profit for the year. If they where punished in that way, their shareholders (who they ultimately answer to) would demand that it did not happen again, so it would hurt much more than a fine.

Sutton and East Surrey Water said on the Radio this evening, that they invested £8m on their network, and made a profit of £6m, out of a total turnover of £42m. I would say that 14% gross profit is rather high for most companies, and also if that money went instead into fixing leaks or building an irrigation channel from Manchester, then perhaps these restrictions would not be necessary.

It hasn't stopped raining around here for a full 24 hour period since the famous 'dry weekend' of 1896. This country is known the world over for its constant, driving, pouring, relentless, unceasing uber-rain.

And we have hose-pipe bans and drought warnings.

    Its like, ironic, or something.

I am always confused by these water bans as we all know that the water which we use in our day-to-day living all gets put back into the system anyway e.g. bath, shower, bog, rosie lee, coffee and washing. Now dont quote me on this as i am not a scientist but im sure that with the water that is left in resevoirs and water works. Evapouration cannot be so high that we have a drought, can it?

Sutton and East Surrey (my water provider) aren't actually too bad on leakages, its Thames that are the problem there. Also we don't use reservoir water, it all comes from lovely bore holes but due to the lack of rain over the last two years those are getting dang low. But on the plus side its one of the smallest companies in the UK and the water quality is superb. I'm just loving the fact that all the smarmy gits with pools round here won't be able to use them!
