Can anyone tell me what they are.
ie, under about £4700 iirc, you pay nothing, whats the boundaries after that ?
Cheers
i think its only 4700 if youre a student, bit lower if youre not iirc, the next is at about 20 i think
According to my last pay slip it's £5035 for the your personal allowance.
yup.. then..
22% on earnings over that allowance up to £33.3k, then 40% on everything over £33k..

£33,300?!?! bugger!
that means i'm in the higher rate tax bracket now. i thought is was £36K ish
/not impressed
what a self indulgent post
It is Inevitable.....
Don't forget the N.I. contributions.
It used to be that as the 40% tax kicked in the NI contribs. stopped...now that serial thief Gordon Brown has removed the ceiling on NI for 1% :-(
W.
not really ikonia, its DAMN anoying. I recon i'll be giving £8,000+ next year, for what, a goverment that didn't even educate me when i was in key stage 3, because i was too busy on NHS waiting lists? A governement who wouldn't give me any help towards paying my rent if i was in between jobs (like an insurance i take out)? A government who has a pensions crisis brewing but wants to tax me because i have the ordasity to want to save money.............................................
NI is the one thats bugged the hell out of me for the last few years, as i've been earning well under £4700 personal allowance last year, but in one week earn't £360. So got heavily taxed by NI.
http://www.listentotaxman.com/ very very useful.
Pisses me off how much of my basic wage will goto the government, plus over a grand a year repaying student loan
A mate of mine was saying thou you pay less NI if you live in london, i think they called it a london ward? But i can't find anything about that, anyone know?
but that asside, i favour a flat rate tax, nice and simple.

There's still a 10%-ish rate between 5K and 8K isn't there?Originally Posted by Stoo
Anyway, I intend to edge into the higher rate bracket this year, and I'll be proud to do so.
NI is 10% of evrything bar the first grand, so thats 2.9k, then 22% of the stuff above 10k, so theres another 4.4, and 10% of the stuff under ten but above the threshold, so prob about another 7/800 there. plus 10% of everything if youre paying student loan off.
Edit, that link is for 2001, so the system has changed a fair bit since then, mainly the removal of the cap on NI
http://www.listentotaxman.com/ slightly better than the one david linked has student loan and other support too.Originally Posted by Agent
I really should be revising, but moaning about tax is more fun.

The link theanimus suggested has all that and the student loan stuff in it too, it's not bad, only a couple of pence off

If anyone is in a pension scheme theses should be deducted before tax is calculated, so if you're on 36K and can pay in say 10% you'll be out of the 40% tax bracket.Originally Posted by Funkstar

If you're not in a pension scheme, then think about it!
