    * You might choose not to watch the adverts, so the TV people lose out on advert sales or something
    * Anyone can download it - people outside the UK aren't supposed to see BBC channels.
    * You're only supposed to keep tapes for 3 weeks I think.

To be honest, I'm not entirley sure why it's banned, but if it was allowed, I'd see no problem with it, and I'd download any show I miss. I think point 3 is the most important in why it's not allowed. After saying that though, I'm sure the BBC let people stream some of their shows from the net, although this might be restricted to UK IPs only...

So if you live in the UK, pay your TV licence, download a show that was *only aired on a BBC channel and you deleted the file after 3 weeks, is that wrong (not morally coz thats obviouse) but legally? as in, could you get prosecuted?

i'd like to see how a case like that turned out lol

does the right/wrong line get foggier if say its a prog that was on sky and you have a sky sub, you just happend to miss it. Sure they can argue you should buy sky+....

I personally dont see anything wrong with it.

because under the 1988 Copyright, Designs & Patents act, it's only legal to make your own recording of TV or Cable recordings, for timeshifting purposes (i.e. watching at a more convenient time, NOT for archiving & viewing repeatedly)

whether you agree with the law is irrelevant.

note that this law also makes ripping cd->mp3 illegal.

So is that saying its ok to watch a download once? (at a more conveniant time of course) or does the fact that it wasn't you that made the said recording make it illegal?

the fact that you didn't make the recordings makes it illegal

The bbc are trialing a system to let you watch/possibly download their shows at the moment. Not sure how the system would work but if it did that could be great for UK TV licence payers

I expect that sky have a special agreement with their content providers, as the programs are encrypted on teh hard disk, and any attempt to remove and decode the programs would be illegal.

Then again, its not much different from a VCR or recordable dvd player, it's just meant for time shifting - not for archiving.

In addition to the 'lost' advertising revenue, If you're downloading a torrent, then you're not just downloading it for your own use because as you're seeding it, you're in effect contributing to the distribution of the material to other people.

it actually has a keep function, where you flag something to keep.

But SKY+ also makes no attempt to remove adverts. Also SKY+ charges a premium subscription for their features, and as such I'd hope gave some of that to the program makers.

Note that on channel4's website you can buy and download every episode of lost, however it works out more expensive than the DVD box sets (i think?) while also being DRM protected and your licence only lasts 24 hours before you cant watch it anymore.

If there was ever a good use for fraps, that would be it (assuming theres not an easyer way with drm-wmv?). Althoguh thats assuming it was free.... which its not... so no.. dont buy it.
