Encoding mpegs from DVD recorder files

I have severa files on my Sony RDR HX510 that I'd like to convert to mpegs so that I can use them in my teaching. What's the best software to use to rip them to my hard drive, and the best to edit them into usable small clips?

You'll probably need to use a combination of software, especially if you are wanting to cut the MPEG up. The good thing is, you can just copy the VIDEO_TS directory straight off the disk and use that without the DVD in the drive. DVD-/+R/RW don't have any copy protection functions, so the files don't need to be on the disk to play them (unlike commercial DVDs).

There sould be something on Doom9, and some info in the guides i think. Basically you want to strip the video and audio streams from the VOB files into an MPEG-2 PS file (Program Stream) and then use an MPEG-2 cutter to shop it up. ProjectX might do the first part for you and MPEG2Schnitz (something like that, it's German for MPEG-2 Cut) for cutting. If you want these encoded as MPEG-4/Xvid/DivX then use VitualDubMod or NanDub, they should be able to read (but not write) MPEG-2 files.

Thanks Funkstar, may have a go at that tonight. I wish there was an interface for my DVD player, it'd make things much easier.

DVD files are essentially MPEGs anyway. Something similar to what you want to do is at section 10 of the video forums FAQ:

    http://www.videoforums.co.uk/reviews/faq

But for chopping up MPEG files, there's a proggy called VideoReDo apparently which can cut up MPEGs without having to re-encode them.

you could also finalise the disc in your dvd recorder and then use dvdshrink on your pc to chop up the parts you want to keep and then reauthor back to a disc.

edit: sorry, just saw the mpegs part

DVDs are essentially just MPEG streams, but they are wrapped up in VOB containers (Video OBjects) along with subtitles, still frames and wole load of other information used by DVD players.

I don't know if VideoReDo will let you process the VOD files directly and save the chunks out as regular MPEG-2 PS streams. Worth a look though i think.
