Hi does anyone know of a piece of free software that will convert my AVI movies into a DVD so that they can be played on a DVD player. I vaguely remember someone saying it could be done with Nero. Is this possible
Cheers

Yep, you can use nero.
Personally I use DivxToDVD though.
or indeed the handy and appropriately titled avi2dvd tool
There is another option (but probably not a useful one!). If your AVI's are DivX (or Xvid) format then you could buy a cheap DVD player that can play DivX films. I bought one for around £30 (a Nortek one) and it reads just about any video format apart from WMV. It'll save on using up loads of blank DVD's, plus the time required to transcode.
This is what I use:-
Excellent free software and using the correct plug-in ( Cinema Craft Encoder which unfortunately can be expensive ) This would output a lot higher quality than a straight encode using Nero etc.

DVD2SVCD (it does do avi to dvd btw, depsite the name) plus a free encoder like Quenc is what I'd use - works a charm.
