Just your bog-standard desktop thread (i've formatted since the last one :D), but it'd be nice to see a little more of peoples' organisation, the kind of apps used, etc

I'm a minimalist. No desktop wallpaper or icons. I use an extended Start Menu for links, plus Quick Launch.
The theme is b0se's Opus 1.2 I think. Find it on Deviant.

Im using the BW theme - nice alu look, coupled with Opera's anodised alu look its nice to be on the net :)

Wallpaper is from themexp.org. I rather liked the look of it. Theme is called Yoshua iTunes or something, again from themexp.org. Loved it since the first time I saw it years ago.

StyleXP
super funky monkey program, 30 day trial and then $20 to register and there are ooodles of free skins.
www.themexp.org is but one of many free sites with skins, login screens, wallpapers and even custom bootscreens.
styleXP is an option, or the slightly harder method which is entirely free & takes 0 bytes of space on your disks is the following:
unzip this for XP without SP1 or this for XP with SP1 to a temporary folder.
rename uxtheme.dll to uxtheme.new
move it to c:\windows\system32
reboot into the recovery console (boot the windows install cd, eventually you can press r to go itno the console)
type
you can now extract skins to c:\windows\resources\themes and actuvate them using the inbuilt windows xp skin changer (where you change Classic or Luna theme) in the display control panelCode:cd system32
copy uxtheme.dll uxtheme.old
copy uxtheme.new uxtheme.dll
copy uxtheme.dll dllcache
exit
.THEME files belong in \resources\themes and dictate a number of settings such as what skin to load, what icons & sounds & wallpaper to use, etc
skinname.MSSTYLES lives in \resources\themes\skinname - and skins can't be reached unless they meet this directory structure.

It's silly, all the settings are right (they used to work), but it often takes another reboot to make em work again !

It's only 1280x1024, native res for a 19"...
Haven't had any problems with that Oli. Sometimes the news scripts will refuse to update without a reboot but my netwrk meters are usually fine. Might be a firewall issue I guess

I just buy chance looked at the FAQ a on the Samurize site. Seems that cos my USB modem uses PPPoE I need to use different perfmon settings. All works fine now :)
Az are you a member of the OCUK forums? If not I suggest you register and search for samurize over there. There was a great big thread about it, and ther was a lot about news scripts etc.

Yamangman, It's samurise with the weather2004.dll and UKTV5 plugins.
Midzt and Ants... You need UKTV5.dll plugin. Go into the forums at samurize.com and do a search for UKTV4, it's in plugin/script help. Site seems down at the mo so I cant get you a link. You should find a LONG thread where Antmatt [sp?] has posted an updated plugin. P.S. Don't do anything till you've read the whole thread, some of the first solutions were wrong!

How come whenevr I choose another theme using style XP or equivilant, my desktop still looks pants. But when you lot post screenies, you all have nice looking desktops. That's why mine is still windows default - even the wallpaper!

try this theme . just the default one but jazzed up abit. tidy up your desktop and find a unique wallpaper. maybe if you have sum lights in your case, then match your wallpaper with your colour sceme :thumbsup:Quote:

There was a big hoo-haa over it last year though. I'm not sure on the specifics but it was never officially released as a theme and soom leet blokes ended up making it into a theme that could be used on normal XP and MS didn't like it.
Of course that story could be made up but I know that all mention of the theme and how to get it was banned from Neowin.net was MS wasn't happy about something.

you can find the newer patch here, i had a few problems with it, but when you install it make sure you wait for it to give you a dialogue box at the end and it works fine. then just click on the msstyles file and it'll load and you can change them in the appearences tab under properties.

edit: the themes above are the microsoft media centre theme and the safari theme, tho a good alternative is winpanther cos then you get a flag not an apple as a start button and you can have a compact start menu.
is that media centre one available at M$'s website...for free?
