Somewhere down south? I think it's just off the M1, but could be wrong!

I certainly know where it is (surrounded by Barnet, Cockfosters, Enfield, Brookman's Park, and so on), and in fact, used to know it quite well - but have only been there a handful of times in the last 15 years or so.

In case you literally want to know where it is, it's about 20, (maybe 25) miles more or less directly due North of Central London. It's about as far south as you can get and still be in Hertfordshire, and not London.

If you come out of London heading North, the odds are you'll use either the A1 or M1. The M1 runs a few miles to the West of Potters Bar, and the A1 runs very close to it indeed (the South Mymm's services on the A1(M) are on the edge of Potters Bar).

    Excuse my childishness.

I know that Potters Bar is south from me in Hull, and the only reason I've heared of it is due to that train crash that was on the news some time ago.

It's scarey how much you learn from bad news.

Yeah, I know all about that crash. My wife worked in Potters Bar for some years. Her office building, and her window, directly overlooks the station, and is about 100 feet from where the crash happened. If you ever watch the TV footage, it's the office building you constantly see in the background.

What's more, she used that railway line to get to and from work everyday, and where the train skidded alongthe platofrm and flattened the station is EXACTLY where she used to stand. If the crash had happened a few hours later, she could well have been one of the victims. And that was about 18 months after the Hatfield crash, which occured on the same line about 5 miles up the track - also on her route to and from work.

Yup, live about 5 minutes from there in Welwyn Garden City. Exactly 20 miles out of Kings Cross. And I know that because the railway bridge is called the 20th Mile Bridge.

I'm about 5 minutes away from Potters Bar, but I'm within the M25. Hertfordshire, for the most part, is a superb place. Not too busy, not too quiet, not full of idiots.

*me hugs the M25, and the label it brings.
