    thanx for the thread

This came about cos I've recently been diagnosed with chron's disease and we thought some foods were making it worse so paid to get an allergy test done against about 300 types of food. Got the results today and I gotta totally exclude cow's milk and potatos, so I guess that also means chips, crisps, bread, cakes etc. Suppose it could've been worse (thought it could've been wheat or gluten). Now just a case of working out which foods contain either of the 2 and not having any I suppose. If you can think of any other obvious foods which contain them which I haven't thought of it'd be useful

Can you drink Soya milk (although it tastes awful, IMHO) or Goats milk. Sainsburys sell both, usually above the milk section.

Although excluding potatos excludes a LOT of food we all eat.

Go on a sugar and coffee diet, you know it makes sence!

Can't drink goats milk but can drink soya, tastes awful at first but you get use to it. The coffee and sugar diet sounds good though

Good thing you don't have to cut gluten out or you'd be really limited.

Crisp will still be okay as long as they are corn or maize based. Tortilla chips etc will be okay too.

You should be fine with some types of bread as well, french bread doesn't have milk in it. Either that or get a breadmaker and make your own... I bang out a couple of loaves a week using no dairy at all except a bit of butter and you can use soya based marg for that.

Of all the soya milks, So Good Blue tastes the best to my mind. Its a fresh product, not a long life one and all those taste pap.

In place of spuds you could use rice, polenta, cous cous, pasta, noodles... plenty of choice there too.

If you want to play it really safe, start off using the specialist stuff such a Sainsbury's 'Free From' range. They're all clearly labled to show you what is in them. Once you've got the hang of it you'll find shopping is dead easy.

Start making your meals from scratch rather than buying ready meals etc. This way you know exactly whats in your food. We don't eat spuds all that often in my house, mainly cos the kids always leave the damn things. In their place I use all the stuff I said earlier and we don't miss spuds at all.

The one you'll have to watch is potato starch, this can crop up in the most unlikely places and is used as an emulsifier/stabiliser in a lot of sauces.

Your GP should be able to provide you with a list of societies to contact for more dietary info, alternatively go to any good bookshop and pick up the food guides they sell. There's a great one I used to have that listed all the ingredients in the top branded names and most supermarket own brand equivalents. It had an index as to what the ingredients did and their side effects for people with dietary needs... dead handy.

Time to start reading those ingredients list!

(don't worry tho, chicks dig a guy who looks like he cares what he puts in his body, its a sure-fire stunner puller!)

Thanks Deck that's a great help!

Hadn't thought of potato starch and didn't realise french bread had no milk in. I'll try to hunt down a good book bout it as well. Suppose this isn't a totally bad thing, once I start cutting out chips, chocolate etc from my diet I'll probs start to lose some weight

sorry to hear bout this mate. soya milk is ok, i tried it a while ago. the important thing is to still maintain the vitamins n minerals you will lose out on from cutting out. the doctors should be able to get you supplements made up i guess.
