    organ music

    Hi all,

Bit of an odd one, but could anyone tell me the name of the composer of the organ music played in pirates of the caribbean: dead mans cheast. I'm almost certain it was not composed for the film because i'm sure i've heard it played at york minster. In the film its the part where Davy Jones is playing the organ with his tentacles Its the only piece of organ music i like, and its bugging me i don't know what it is.

    Thanks

    Andy

Edit: the soundtrack doesn't appear to be released yet so i can't look there

iirc, the music for the film was written by Hans Zimmer. Hans is known for recycling things, if you listen to the Gladiator sountrack which he wrote with lisa gerrard, then listen to the first pirates soundtrack, which he oversaw, the similarities are striking. However, in this case, i think that the piece is a modern composition, but loosely based on Bachs Toccata and Fugue like the descending scale with the octaved pedal on the offbeat. Its a popular organ piece, most of us have probably heard it before without actually knowing what its called.

    That was my thoughts anyway

That sounds good, the piece in the film is probably modified somewhat. I just remember it being played in York minster (the big cathedral in york, for those that don't know ) and it sounding amazing, the organ there is mahoosive, but thats the only time i've heard it sound good. I just can't appreciate that kind of music, most of the time anyway.

i love soundtrack music, its such a refreshing change from all the bilge and drivel that seems to be released these days. If you can get hold of it, listen to a track by Hans and Lisa called Now We Are Free (Maximus Mix) its the dance remake of theme when he's walking through the golden fields of the after-life, and its utterly amazing!

Only once, my godmother's husband owns the organ builders who had the restoration contract and the current maintenance one (I actually live in Kent!).

Organs are great fun to play around with. The church whose choir I used to sing in had a really nice one, and I used to play my grade 2 piano pieces on it at maximum attack. Sadly that's about as far as I ever got on the piano, so there really was no chance of my becoming an organist.

I never mastered the Fuga but I can play the Tocatta and it feels fantastic to play, especially building up that huge 9 note C#dim7 (I think) chord with the discordant D on the bass (from memory so don't shoot me if I remembered it wrong). You can FEEL the chord right in your gut, absolutely fabulous.

Pity, but something whilst on the topics of organs I'll point out is having played both for several years they are totally different beasts and frankly this stuff about learning the piano to G5 before starting the organ in experience is complete BS. If you're musically inept then you'll get more from the piano probably, but apart from the fact they have a sort of similar keyboard is where the similarities end.
