Just caught this on the BBC website If it's true then it's getting quite ridiculous. I'm now seriously looking to Apple.

I can see your anger as we are all pretty much keen to get our hands on this OS. But what you fail to understand is that maybe a delay could prevent you from having an OS which is buggy and well... crap. Have you ever heard of the saying "good things come to those who wait?"
I agree. Imagine if something like Battlefield 2 had been released 3 months later. It would be so much less buggy, and everyone would be loads happier! But people take it for granted that things are "made without bugs". We can't really rush them, it'll be good when it gets here.Originally Posted by mart_haj86

I don't.
It is annoying though.
what would you rather have - buggy software released sooner or a more stable version released later (vista will still probably have bugs on release but hey, i haven't seen any software recently that doesn't). Whats the big deal anyway, XP isn't suddenly going to stop working
the longer it takes the better, gives me time to save up for a new pc
but it means the vista dx10 release game like alan wake will be delayed also
I wasn't implying that Vista is nothing new, one of the things i'm looking forward to is DX10 in the near future, all i was trying to say is that we can live without vista for a few extra months, its not the end of the world its been delayed.
Edit: I'm on work placement as a software engineer, and i know how hard it is to produce bug free software so i have much more respect for microsoft these days, as their job must incredibly complex

No it was directed at all the people who say vista looks just like XP and there is nothing new on offer as that's so far of the mark it's just silly. Anyway, let's just hope they do take their time and get it right - my own experience is very encouraging and they've even implemented a change due to little old me

ah sorry my bad
I'm not sure about the delay. Call me a sceptic, but I don't see an organisation of MS's size delivering quite the focused product. Already the razor has been weilded on a number of features and I'm quite concerned that they could be just writing around problems and adding 'quick fixes' at the moment. Sure, they might address bugs etc. that have been found, but I'd prefer a lean product that was closer to the original design spec than one that's had gauges cut out of it and then been patched up later.
XP is great, now. But Vista does bring a lot more - it's not that we have DX10 cards now, but Vista needs to get out there so that the early adpoters can get stuck into it. There will always be a delay between when an OS is released and when games can take advantage of it, but delays to the OS at this stage put everything else back. I'm quite sure that ATI and NVidia would have prefered not to have to release another DX9 only part.
So yeah, delays can be ok, and may well be neccessary. I just wish in this instance they could have had a leaner project from the start and made fewer changes.
I can assure you they're not just hacking atm - as of July 3rd 2006 they have closed or resolved 21,736 bugs with 5,743 open - so the process of iterative bug reporting and fixing is going well. Newer builds feel much sleeker and my overall impression is that things are dramatically improving with time now.
As for having "a leaner project from the start and made a fewer changes" well no, they couldn't. The XP codebase is exactly what you're worried about - it's a huge collection of hacks and fudges full of horrible legacy code. The very reason why Vista is/was such a big undertaking is because it's a kernel-up rewrite - they're trying to break away from the mistakes of the past and build a solid base for the future. It's a nightmare in software development terms as all the work you've done in the past is redundant (aside from teaching you what NOT to do) and something i'm getting rather familar with as we prepare to do exactly the same thing for the first time in 20-30years of code development here. We know we've got to do it, but that doesn't make the prospect of starting over any easier..
Yeah I've done the same thing as well, but in a large organisation (100+ programmers) it was a nightmare.
I know XP was what I was worried about - it's good now but only after a huge amount of hacking. Vista definately started with the aim of breaking away from the mistakes of the past, and even though the bug instances are coming down I still can't help but wonder at the amount of slippage.
I'm not angry about it being delayed (it's only an OS after all!) but considering that this OS was meant to be released somewhere around 2004 it's getting a tad stupid.

No no no, it would have a few extra features and a new map but would have even more bugsOriginally Posted by Jonny
