struggling to see the point to chip and pin...

what is the point in this?

surley you dont need a pin to buy anything over the internet or phone? only when you want to take cash out of the wall and pay by card in shops???

i work in a shop and someold lady was like you looking at my pin as she entered it, i said " why would i want to do that maddam? if i know the pin is irellevant, you cant do anything with the pin without the card, and you dont need the pin to use the card...

    what am i missing

thats the system that is being steadily introduced. The pin replaces the signature as the security measure when paying by card, as only the cardholder should know the pin, but signatures are sometimes easily forged. Soon, there will be no signature checking when u pay by card, as everyone should have chip and pin.

Well Chip and Pin was supposed to be fully integrated back in February iirc. Sometime in March I used my card and they asked for my signature instead. Strange!

It's a pretty cr*p security measure if you ask me. What's the point of entering you PIN when everyone behind you in a supermarket queue can see? Even the checkout folk can see what your inputting. It's now mannerly to look away when people are entering their PIN (or at least it is in my area) and I think that says it all. Some wee twerp could watch you putting your PIN in, mug you later and then take your cash out of a machine no probs or even walk into a shop and use your card to buy stuff!

Chip and Pin makes it even easier for the above case - mugging you for your card, as all they have to do is be behind you in a queue and see your pin, then mug you outside the shop.

The idea though is that if you find a card on the street, or skim a card etc you cant use it..so it cuts down on that side of crime.

Online is a different world entirely, and chip and pin isn't implemneted there..(yet?). Many reputable banks have their own system though, for example with my credit card which is with the RBS/VISA, some websites ask you for a password to be able to use the card. I think its called 'verified by visa' - a great system, but only if the merchant supports it ;/

edit: The Chip and Pin system also eliminated cashire error when recognising signatures, as its black and white right/wrong - and you cant operate a scam as easily if the fraudster has a friend working in a shop. It also makes life easier as a consumer, and allows for real security on the 'self checkouts'.

Did you know for example that when you use a 'self checkout' and sign on the digital pad, your signature is not verified? There is a legal issue that means the merchant can't send the signature to your bank for verification, so it just saves it incase of dispute...chip and pin makes these self checkouts much more secure

tbh, with the signature system, all they need is ur card, as your signature is on the back of the card anyway (forgot about that) but with the chip and pin system, they also need to know ur pin.

erm... so you steal someone's card, go online, order yourself the latest gear from scan, all for free (to you), get them to deliver it to.... :/

I think I may have just spotted why chip and pin isn't so necessary online! LOL

    It's a wierd thing.

At Tescos on the tills, sometimes when you swipe someones card, the machine asks for a signature. Now that might be because

    a) The chip is damaged or dirty
    b) It's a security thing

But yeah, don't be surprised if you randomly get asked to sign on occasions.

Ye, most e-tailers don't allow the first order to be made to another address unless of course you make 2 orders, one for a mousemat or something to their address and then a second order to your address *imagines what he would do with someone elses credit card *
