I think it raises more than a couple of questions in order to make it workable, however well meant. Not sure my Trek Y5 has anywhere to put a plate.

Sounds like another way of raising more money to me.
Livingstone always has been and always will be a revenue grabbing moron.
yeah i agree with frumpet just another way of making money personally i think that it is a really rubbish idea putting a number plate on your bike and having it registered
Please write your complaint legibly in that box -->[].
If they are going to do that then they need to make sure that those carts that old people ride have them too ( there's one old git always holding up traffic around where we are, i'd love to shove that amber light somwehere where the sun don't shine, it's dangerous )..... and as they all use the roads then they should pay road tax like car drivers have too, then they should have insurance..... i can see it all coming

Hmm i'm in two minds about this..
here in switzerland we have a ban on jaywalking - its illegal and if the police see you doing it they WILL pull over and have a go..and they *can* fine or arrest you for it (although i've only ever been told off for it). The difference is that we have pedestrian crossings everywhere, and cars will actually stop for them (!!) so it kind of makes sense here. I'm not sure that would work in england, with a) english people and b) the lack of crossings in england
The whole bike plate thing...well again we have a similar system, in that all bikes must be registered and you have to buy a 'vignette' (costs 5chf, about 2.20GB) sticker to prove this.
It's not as bad as a number plate but you can still be identified from it..not sure if it would show up on cameras or not. either way this is a very good idea, because as well as making it legal to ride a bike on roads, it gives you 3rd party insurance on your bike(!) Which is nice if your in an accident...
If they implemented a system like that but replace vignette with a number plate maybe it wouldnt be such a bad trade off...3rd party insurance in exchange for wearing a plate on the back =)
It's great isn't it? Don't pollute, ride a bike! Get some exersise, ride a bike! Cut congestion, ride a bike! Oh look we got loads of people using bikes and some of them do illegal things so lets penalise people for riding bikes. Idiots.
I have 3 bikes with nowhere to put a plate on. And if I ride my bike without a plate who is going to catch me? The same people who currently catch and penalise cyclists for riding on pavements and jumping red lights? Will bikes for 5 year olds have to be licensed and will they be fined for riding on pavements? You'd have to have a whole bureaucracy of licensing and enforcement which would be stupidly expensive.
It's totally unworkable and is typical of a communist like Red Ken who just wants to control what everybody does.
As for "jay walking" - I'm an adult with a mind of my own - I can judge when and where to cross the road safely. If you can't then welcome to casualty.

^^what he said.
I used to be a very keen cyclist, and I rode on the pavement occasionally, when it made my journey safer, or quicker. In 15 years of regular cycling however I never once endangered a pedestrian or even came close to frightening them. Occasionally I rode past policemen with no comeback- because I was cycling at little above walking pace and clearly giving way to pedestrians. Nowadays I'm more of a pedestrian myself, and I regularly get cut up by tw*ts bombing up the pavement on bikes. It's a matter of time before I deliberately hold my ground and hip charge someone's handlebars to see how they like the taste of pavement.
Ken Livingstone is a chronic ****wit if he thinks that registration plates and cameras are going to discourage antisocial cyclists- just as speed cameras do precisely sod all to discourage the majority of dangerous and inconsiderate drivers I see. On the roads, and on the pavements, the only solution is to have more actual policemen patrolling with the express aim of nicking people who break the rules.
Oh, no! They're "safety cameras" not speed cameras.
They obviously catch all untaxed, uninsured, DUI, MOT failures and daft old coots doing 3mph in their Hondas. Just catching speeding motorists is a side benefit.
the camera's are just the polices cash point, down the south where i live they always put em at the bottom of a hill that also turns.....
so its impossible to see them till its too late....
no fair!
QFT. Unfortunately the police are now so politicised that they are told to stupid things rather than serve the people who give them their powers and pay their wages. Or they are filling in paperwork about gender equality and ethnic diversity rather than walking the streets preventing crime and reassuring people. Quite a distorted perception of risk is evident here. Wonder what the following numbers are:
1. Number of people killed/injured by cyclists each year
2. Number of people killed/injured by unlicensed grannies on electric scooters each year
3. Number of people killed/injured by motorists each year
and for a bonus point:
4. Percentage of motor accidents where excessive speed is a contributing factor
Without finding out the answers let's just go ahead and licence and tax cyclists, clamp the disabled, whine about the price of petrol, and protest against speed cameras![]()
Heard about this from a friend about half an hour ago then saw this¬
Banning jaywalking shouldn't occur, if the traffic is still due to a crossing 200 yards down the road then why not cross where we are if we're careful rather than go down 200 yards and find the traffics started again! If people can't judge the time they have to cross then they should use a crossing, but if you can then there's no problem.
Bet they'll monitor cyclists much more than some of the crappy drivers in London.
Can we arrest short drivers aswell who come below the wheel... they really piss me off.
I support some of the stuff Ken has done but I totally agree with that ^.Originally Posted by frumpet
I don't think there is anywhere you could physically place a registration number (Of any readable size - to a camera), that you couldn't easily just reach around and cover up as you go through a red light or whatever... Hell I could probably do it on my motorbike with ease if I wanted to.
Stupid idea.
Edit: Then again, anybody fancy starting up a bike mountable speed/whatever detector business with me?
