    Credit reports

Out of curiosity I want to see my credit report, just wondering if anybody has used Experian before to request their report?

Any good? I've never heard of them before, hence why I'm hesitating (don't want to give all my details to some random company ).

For £2 seems worth it just to see what information is held about me

Experian are probably the biggest credit history company in the UK, recognised by almost 100% of lenders, and provide an accurate report on your credit scoring/history.

I have used them before and had good accurate results.

    Cheers.

Tried to get one, but apparantly they can't confirm my identity...
Well if I can't get my own identity confirmed guess I shouldn't worry too much about it being stolen

There are only two major credit agencies, Equifax and Experian. There is a newer one called MyCallcredit but they dont hold as much information as the other two just yet.

Any information pertaining to credit transactions, accounts and such is recorded with either Equifax or Experian, usually both.

If you're getting a report from one then you need to get one from the other too. It can be the case that Equifax have something on file that contradicts something on your Experian file.

The important thing to realise is that you do not have such a thing as a centrally held credit file. Many people are under the impression that somewhere there is a single 'credit file' on them and that Equifax or Experian will 'go and get it for them' so to speak. This is not the case, each of these companies holds a collective of information about your credit activities and identity details as provided by their respective clients.

Your 'credit score' is not unique either. You may receive a glowing scoring from Equifax but find you receive a less than satisfactory score from Experian. This can be because one has information that the other doesn't but is also because they use different methods for credit scoring.

You should always bear in mind that credit companies and lenders use the information provided by Equifax and Experian as a guide and then use their own 'credit scoring' system. Some companies will use the Equifax/Experian score instead and rely soley on the information provided. There is no hard and fast rule as to who uses what and you will never get to find out how any companies' credit scoring system actually works. All you can do is ensure that your Equifax/Experian files are up to date and factually correct.

Oh and if they can't confirm your identity, I'd be worried about that. Get it sorted out.

I'm not too worried, wouldn't know how to sort it out if I wanted to though.

I'm only 21 (well, technically in 2 weeks I'm 21) & have 1 store card, 1 credit card & a student loan.. so they might not have too much info on me, I moved and went under the radar for a while too as I didn't bother updating any of my addresses on things, and I've just moved again (though this time I have updated them ).

The cards are more than enough 'info' on you, that's what a credit report is about. If you've ever missed a payment, defaulted on a loan, gone over your limit, missed a mobile contract payment, defaulted on a utility account etc it's all on your report and stays there for six years. It will affect credit applications, bank loans, mortgages even an application for a mobile phone contract.

'Going under the radar' is one of the worst things to do with your credit history. If you're not on the electoral role under your current address you may find credit applications very difficult.

Claiming ignorace is no excuse, send off for the files from Equifax and Experian, make sure everything is up to date and sort out anything that may be wrong. The reports come with an explanation of what to do in most circumstances.

Take a word of advice from someone with a vast amount of experience with credit files, messed up financial history and 'head in sand' syndrome.....look after your credit file or you may very well sorely regret it down the road when circumstances and priorities change.

I've never missed any payments, etc. I've never even paid interest (I pay off my CC fully every month).
Don't know if I'm on the electoral role, probably am at my mums address - but I don't bother voting.

I've never been refused credit anywhere (when I signed up for all my utilities they all said they were doing a credit check & it came back ok..).

Not much I can do if it says they don't have enough information to verify my identity... I don't have the time (or inclination) to bother writing to them It was just curiosity originally.. perhaps in a year or so I will (long enough time at this address to build up something here).

Indeed .. I figured out a few years ago that I worried too much and it was driving me crazy.. now I just don't bother and it works out great .. including my favourite come-back "yeah, but you also might get run over by a bus tomorrow"

I'm using this at the moment but it doesn't give very detailed reports etc or a summary of your actual credit score, it does however show that all of my credit cards bills were paid on time and in full (mainly due to my purchases at amazon, play and scan etc.)

CreditExpert is the online arm of Experian, so it's perfectly trustworthy.

Every credit check not done by a vendor or merchant lowers your score slightly, only slightly but it is worth not doing it repeatedly.

Missed credit card payments only begin to affect your score after 3 in a row I believe but it is kept on record for detail.

To qualify that statement more concisely; checking your own credit files with Equifax or Experian (CreditExpert) does not lower your credit score in any way, you can access your credit files as many times as you wish within any period of time.

Credit searches by lenders such as credit cards, mortgages, loans and so on will show up as previous searches. Too many searches of this type within a period (searches disappear after 6 months) will adversely affect your score as it may appear to a lender that you are desperate to obtain credit.
