Siamese Kitten, what's the TCO?

A friend of mine is getting all broody, and wants a siamese kitten, but whilst you get fairly good breads for about £300, i was woundering whats the total cost of owning one for about a year?

Anyone had any experiance, are they more expensive to care for than a regular kitten? How much would vets bills etc generally be in london.

independant gartner research shows that the initial pinkware costs of chinchillas are lower than kittens, but the training costs mean the 15-year TCO is higher.

Go to the RSPCA and get one for a measly £25 donation. There, you've saved £275 already.
If you're lucky, then you might get a siamese mix or similar.

A couple of things, one its going to have to live with a pug, so getting it as a kitten, with an agreement with her taking it back within 2 months is a must, even if they charge for the priveledge.

There is a reason for getting a pure siamese and I'll be dammed if i'm working 50 hours a week and can't buy the 'perfect' kitten!

The problem is my friend who's the owner to be is doing her masters, and i've a hunch is goign to do a phd, and the funding she'll get, i want to know she can afford such an animal. (this is not ment to be-little her funding, even thou they said no to me... barstuards).

and hex, i've been known to have brief moments at weekends when i'm not geek

Forgive me for saying this, as I don't know you personally, but it sounds like you're choosing a fashion accessory, not a living animal. You don't get pets out for a "trial" period, and I seriously hope you're joking about the "perfect" kitten.

There are plenty of cats around already; as has been suggested, why not give a home to one that has already been discarded because it didn't fit someone else's lifestyle. We've always had rescue cats, perfect or not and loved them like any other.

first off, its not for me, also some websites which allow you to find litters, the owners activly advertise that they will let you trial it, as if it dosen't get on with the pug it dosen't seam fair to keep it.

And yes, the breed of it would probably be a fassion accessory in the same way a good looking girl friend is, from simple supply + demand, the price goes up. Its not that which is the problem, inbreeding to get these desirable features is, but thats another rant.

In short, once again, its not for me, its for a friend, who i've arranged (with her mum's help) to get this kitten as a graduation gift. But before i get her a bread thats pretentious, i want to ensure that it won't be too much of a finacial drain, i don't really belive in getting a pet if you can't afford the best care for it.

Even shorter, my money, buying cat, don't really care as long as < £500
Caring for it, my mate on her grant, so want to ensure that care isn't too expensive.

Cat lovers forums seam to provoke many different price ranges, most of which seam to be fassion accessories :S

I'm assuming after more research for 1 year,
£200 vaxinations + insurance (vets)
£250 foods.

so probably about £750 in total.

The best idea would be to buy insurance cover. The cost for this varies from £90-180 per year depending on cover (I checked a couple of online quotes for siamese cats). These don't include routine vaccinations and neutering, which will add around £110 to the cost. Obviously there's the cost of food, cat litter, a cat flap, cat toys, etc as well.

thanks charleski, as long as vaccinations and neutering don't exceed £150, thats grand! (plus insruance of say £150, i'd imagine london will add a tadd to it). So basically about £500 for the kitten + core medical.

food and toys about £150-300 depending on how dedicant the food + toys are, but she should be able to afford that over the course of a year.

I gave them my London postcode for the quote, so you'll probably get much the same .

I didn't add in the costs of broken glassware and ripped-up furniture, but that's part of the fun .

[edit]Oh, I should note that when I was ticking the boxes for quotes I specified ones for a non-neutered cat. Obviously you'll only want to neuter the kitten later-on, but insurance for a cat with gonads will cost more (no surprise there). When you get the insurance it's probably best to phone them up and tell them that you'll be having the cat neutered when it's appropriate at 6 months, as that should bring the cost down.
