    Quick Restart?

    Hey Guys,
I vaguely recall that on one version of NT I used, there was an option to do a 'quick restart', whereby just the OS would be restarted, as opposed to the PC rebooting.

Does anybody know if such a feature is available in XP Pro, perhaps through a command etc?

This thread would probably get the best answers in the OS and App forum. Logging off and on again forces a reload of most things I believe.

I'm pretty sure NT could do too; I believe that up to and including 2000 it was available. I'm just wondering if its a hidden feature in XP, which can be unlocked/enabled.

i don't think you have it in XP,

but you still have critical log off (very usefull)

crtl + alt + delete press ctrl whilst choosing log off
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)

In 95/98 I believe you could kill explorer in task manager and it would reload quickly resarting and reloading the top level interface.

    I've been wrong before though!

Yeah, Explorer can be reloaded which does have the same effect as rebooting in some instances, but it doesn't reload the registry (I believe), which requires a rull restart of Windows.

Oh well, thanks for the help anyway guys. Let's hope Vista brings back the feature then.
