    Airport Security Measures

How long does everyone think these new security measures concerning hand luggage will be in place? I'm flying next week, and am not looking forward to a flight with nothing to do. I can't believe you're not even allowed to take a book or magazine onboard.

Which airline are you flying with?

I know Continental has a fairly good in flight program with 10+ channels of different movies and TV shows...

Not much else I can suggest, at least they let you keep your shoes...

When will we be flying naked?

The latest article on bbc news state they could be here for ever, and that measures will certinally be changed.

    Obvioulsy more sophiscated over time.

But, if you could take hand luggage next week, i'd be VERY surprised. Aint' gonna happen. Sorry bud, i'm the same, on holiday sunday.

the reason you arent allowed to take magazines on board is because of a growing trend among terrorists of happy swatting.

My mother and sister are flying to Australia this morning. Imagine how much fun that will be!

As well as the new hand luggage restrictions, they have to check in 5 hours before their flight. That seemed quite excessive to me.. isn't it usually 2 hours?

i think these restrictions are absolutely rediculous.

No book or magazine? what a crock of ****!!

i assume you also have to put your mobile into hold bagage too then. so you end up being delayed and have no way to contact someone meeting you at the other end. great. super fantastic even.

i'm sure you wouldn't find them ridiculous if someone blew your plane out the sky mate....

i can see where your coming from the measures are a little extreme and its causing massive delays at airports but it is in the interest of public safety to do so. at the end of the day tho, if someone is mad enough to want to blow an plane up, there going to find a way to do so with or without handluggage

Listening to the news this morning a few airports are expect a 'smoother' day, some flights will be cancelled or delayed because planes are in the wrong place because of yesterday disruption. The prediction is that people turning up to the airport will not have to re-pack in the airport as they will have sorted out their hand luggage before arriving - not like yesterday.

So just the checking of shoes should be the only additional delay (once the planes are in the right plance), saying that I when through Dublin airport in February this year and they were asking some people to remove their shoes to be scanned - it didn't take too long.

I would be very surprised if things ever go back to what they were..although I would expect them to lessen the restrictions soon..once we have got used to these very restrictive measures - that way when they do lower them we will all be so grateful and praise the government..nothing if not clever eh

The most stupid part of all this is that it won't help one bit against terrorism. If someone wants to blow up a plane they can do it in a multitude of ways - ranging from simple SAM type attacks (not that difficult to get your hands on the equipment if you have money and contacts), to paying off airport staff (find a small airport..plenty of people would be persuaded by money or kidnapping their family), you could create devices that would fit in your wallet and appear like a credit card etc..the new restrictions do nothing to help this.

Sure it would stop your average chav from taking a pound of semtex on board, but seriously - no terrorist would be that stupid. Terrorists are not thick, no matter what the media would have you believe.

electronic devices i can understand. although i still think it is a step too far

but BOOKS? how the hell can you blow up a plane with a damned book?? or a magazine??

it's like when you see child safety scissors in the "sharp object" bin in front of security. the whole point of them is that they are NOT DANGEROUS.

There will always be a trade off between security and freedom. This is quite a lurch in favour of security. I suppose they will have to do this until they are sure they have not missed any of the "plotters". The airlines that don’t have complementary drinks/food will be loving this, cha-ching! Tbh, I can't see them banning mobiles/mp3 players/laptops forever. It seems they will be cracking down on liquids and creams though.

I guess this is the point where our authorities and airports need to spend the money to replace the antiquated metal detectors / X ray machines currently in place.

I imagine, that in the long term, this is going to hurt the airlines for short haul flights.
Afterall for a Dublin-London journey the concept of a spending 2 hours on a ferry and 4 hours on a train seems suddenly inviting when the alternative is spending 4 or so hours checking in and getting strip searched at the airport and then 2 hours on a plane with nothing to do but stare out the window .
