Who slated the Black Country accent and then said they loved the Scottish and Irish accents?!
WTH! I have an Irish friend, and I understand less than 1 word a sentence.

I'm from the black country and thought I had a non-regional dialect until I went to America and a bloke said, "You're from Dudley aren't you?"

(I'm not. I'm actually from Wordsley, which is an amazing village, where Ronnie O'Sullivan, The Queen and Gary Barlow were all born. Or at least one of the three.)

But yeah, when talking to my mates I'm the posh one. Anytime I go elsewhere I notice my accent a LOT. I also notice I call girls "birds" a hell of a lot. And they don't like it. :@

I can't believe it. I've just had to add Wordlsey to the Wikipedia list of Black Country areas.

How could the original author forget us?

Well.. I don't think I have much of an accent.. but then I meet people from other areas.. and they all find it highly amusing the way 'Bristolians' speak.. ! pffft.!

..Blimey, the 'black country' translation was well different to what I thought it could of been!.. Got the first half but thought the second was about someone coming to look after your house!

hehe I know just what you mean - my accent has changed over the years and i've been told its now a mix of mancunion and (thanks to being stuck in Stafford for 3 years) midlands/staffordshire accent. This caused immense problems when I moved over here for my placement year at first, as I spoke very fast, dropped certain words or replaced them with local colloquialisms - which really confuses your average swiss/german/french person lol

It means talking quite slowly and thinking about every sentence now, as you have to take into account their knowledge of english, my actual accent and the dialect to go with it..got it down to a tee now after a year, but at first it was..interesting lol

I have a Hull accent, albeit a posh one... well it's posh to the non-posh Hull folk. I'm also a bit Yorkshire, usually when my northern pride kicks in, as it does now and then, living in Bristol as I do.

Still, in Hull we're just lazy gits. We only use half of the sounds that can be made, mainly because we can't be arsed with the rest. The result is we sound like half wits; well, the really thick Hull accents sound attrocious, whereas mine's just more comical.

We had a guy from Canada over for work a couple of years ago. He was amazed at how much accents vary from one part of the country to another, yet along from one town or village to another.

Apparently the accent changes in Canada from the east to west coast, but nothing like we have here

I have the general stereotyped Mancunian accent that everyone seem's to take the mickey out of

I've been told I sound like Liam, Noel and of course Terry Christian from his early "the word" day's.

'Cor goo awt tonawt, thee nuss aas gota comen av a look at thee oss.'

I can't understand that, and I live a stones throw away in Birmingham.

Even we Brum types can look down on some people, and people from Dudleeeeeeeeey are one of those we do.

Personally I don't like any Midlands accent, but the stronger and more pronounced the worse it sounds. I didn't think I had a strong Birmingham accent, but the first time I spoke to Tigs, after the very first words I said she goes - OMG! So Brummie!

    Its a curse.

Could be worse..the key test I always use is:

whats this? (holds up a glass)

Its always one of two responses - 'Glass' or 'Glarse' (or a 'frack off' from my southern mate who i constantly take the mick out of for his response)

No matter what the midlands accent sounds like to you, at least 90% of people from the midlands understand that glass doesn't have an R in it

Im liking how Dudley is now becoming the butt end of all jokes for the Midlands, as opposed to Tipton
I feel like im going up in the world. Perhaps I should become a little bit of a leftie now ?

I'm told that I have a Midlands accent - doesn't really sound like to to me. Apparently instead of saying "I" I say "oi", that kind of thing.

    Whoite, knoife, etc. lol
