Ohh boy, the LTTE have set off another car bomb 2 mins away from my house :(

    Dear All,

I'm not sure how many of you have heard about the LTTE, but they are a terrorist organisation that started off in 1983 (The year I was born infact) and since then they have been killing fellow Sri Lankans left, right and center. We are technically under a 'cease fire' but few minutes ago they just set off a second car bomb in the city of Colombo, on a road that is 2 mins away from my house.

I guess right now all anyone can do is pray and hope that 'the powers that be' will take a more serious interest in the situation in Sri Lanka as this no longer (it hasn't for many years infact) classify as civil war. Since when did the massacre of innocent civilians ever get classed that way?

Hope you stay safe, and it gets sorted out soon. Have LTTE claimed responsibility for it, or is it just speculation atm?

They blew up one on Friday killing a school kid and sending a few more to the hospital with injuries. Today 15 went to the hospital but 7 died and the rest were army soldiers.

Ctid, it is them (has been confirmed) and only a couple weeks ago they attempted to starve a village of water and killed 7 French citizens who were with one of the 'aid' groups...

Forgive me for being ignorant, but what exactly are they fighting for?

Seems like they tried to off the Pakistani Ambassador. They are fighting to take over the country. They've been slaughtering civilians and army personnel for years. Their main form of income is through the extortion of Tamils (the LTTE *are* tamil) and have/had bases in London, Canada and Zurich where they fund raise millions of pounds to purchase arms and deal in drugs etc.

Their primariy means of assasination is via suicide bombers, who are usually female. Recently they killed an army General by sending a pregnant woman who had a bomb in her belly, killing her, the baby and the general and his body guard. Also most of their soldiers are conscripted children in the north.

Most of the past presidents have been assasinated by the LTTE, including Chandrika Bandaranayake (who ain't dead) but lost her right eye in a failed attempt. They even killed one of their own mediators (via a sniper taking him out while he was @ home) and recently the ex EPDP minister via the first car bomb on Friday, thereby killing a school kid in the process.

It is extremely frustrating when reading sites like BBC which sprouts 'watered' down versions of everything, thereby sympathising with the LTTE. Even British tabloids have for ages reported 'half' the story and have made it sound much less terrible than it really is.

It's terrible, yet the world does nothing and I think the time for false 'peace/cease fire' is long over.

Thats horrible man, sending a pregnant woman! Thats just plain wrong. Are these people volunteers or are they forced into such acts of humanity?

Seems though that the UK along with every other civil country also has their fair share of people who live in our country, but hate it at the sametime...more so they like what it has to offer, but hate the people who inhabit it. Which begs the question, why don't they f&#k off 'home'!

The world would be a better place without religion, of that I have no question. At least these impressionable fools would have to think of a genuine reason to bomb civilians that way.

From what I've heared the suicide bombers undergo severe brain washing by the LTTE, to condition them for their task and they are given a large meal before they are sent off to perform their inhumane tasks...

Yes, I know exactly what you mean (and who you are referring to) but thankfully the conflict here isn't a 'religious' conflict or at least they don't use religion to justify their acts of violence against humanity but rather they just use 'terror' and 'fear' to get their points across. 26 years later and they are still at it, I just wonder how much longer this can go on....

Are you referring to the people here? Or the situation in Sri Lanka, because bsodmike didn't actually say the LTTE are fighting for religious purposes, rather for control of the country. I agree with you that the world would be safer without religion, but as the LTTE proves, it's still not going to stop all wars and civilian casualties.

That makes the problem even worse, because i assume people are paranoid when they see pregnant women, thinking they may have a bomb inside them! It makes it harder to stop them before they detonate because it's most likely harder for the army to shoot pregnant women, than men.

    Good god mate.

There's no end to the terrorist threat nowadays is there, regardless of the cause.

    Here's hoping you'll be safe.

Sorry you're so close to the action Mike, and terrorism can never be justified, but there are two sides to every story. Perhaps the Tamils could be given some of the autonomy they demand- a similar process seems to have stopped the IRA killing people in NI for several years now.

...and the violence doesn't stop. Rave, two sides yes, but as you can see from the link posted by yourself they have been classed as a terrorist movement by a fair group around the world, including Canada and the US. Still, being a victim of their violence (some time ago a bomb went off even closer to our house causing one of the high ceiling to collapse and blew all the windows in!) I can not sympathise with them and I think the worlds finally coming around and seeing them truly for what they are.

    Update:

This is the Pakistani President's car, he really had a close shave...
