    Men's electric shaver

    Hey all,
Can I please have some recommendations from the menfolk (presumably) of hexus for what electric shaver to get? My GP has recommended I change from wet shave to electric as wet can give me a nasty rash
I'm a student, so don't have piles of cash to splash, and also i'd like one that gives a decent close shave to [VOICE="camp as christmas"] sensitive [/VOICE] skin
    Thanks

got a philips phillishave - no complaints here - it is a mains one so cheaper than a charger if I can't power my shaver I've got bigger problems on my hands than my facial hair. I've only ever wet shaved in emergencies. got used to dry shaving from the start. you will have to get used to a less perfect shave

    Just grow a beard...

I have a strange purple/green three headed rechargeable phillishave. Not sure how much it cost but it was from Argos and I don't think it was that much.

I've used one of these for the last 2 years as I used to get a really bad rash like yourself. It gives a good shave and completly stopped my rash.

you have a primary choice to make - phillips style or foil style.

personally I don't get on with the phillishave type 3 head thingies, i've always used foil shavers

Currently have a remmington twin-foil - only 40quid for a rechargable one in boots/argos, a good, clean close shave with built in trimmers if you need them.

Anyone got experience of both the foil head and the phillips style? If so, relative merits please...
Thanks everyone who's commented so far

My grandad had used a foil type for his entire life until about 5 years ago when we convinced him to buy a new phillishave and he was amazed at the difference! Obviously thats not a personal experience but he was happier with the phillishave.

I've got the one TiMeZeRo linked to or something very similar. It was my first ever shaver, given to me on my 16th birthday by my dad. Works very well and not too expensive. Funny thing about them is that when the blades get blunt its nearly as cheap to buy a complete new shaver than new blades

i tried an electric shaver a while back... it was a foil head one i think? ... PAINFUL !

used it for a week everyday before i gave up, my face was totally beaming red and sore as hell. (and never felt as close as a wet shave)

went back to mach3 + king of shaves oil (Try it its ace) + red hot water = happy face.

edit: i should say mine was only a cheap one Braun ~£30 so this might be why, i didnt want to spend loads in case i didnt like it which i didnt.

Around that there are loads of good shavers - if you have access to a Costco, they usually have one of the Braun foils, of the Philishave models that retails for 140+ at just under 100. I use a philishave for a few years (bought cheaply from Costco) and its great. Biggest expense is replacing the blades as that ocsts a fortune in the UK. Usually get someone to send it over from the states (I buy from Amazon.com and get a friend to send it in a jiffy bag - in the UK its about 40 quid, in the states its about 30 dollars).

Phillishave are very good, the only problem is cost, but keep an eye on argos, and especially boots end of seasons sales and you can get good ones. The main thing I look for is how long the battery lasts and how long it takes to charge - phillishave auto-sharpen so the lifetime of the shaver is basically determined by the battery.

Having said that I couldn't find an offer for one when I needed a replacement so got a braun foil shaver. It's also pretty good - it's as close as the phillishave, if not slightly closer, *but* doesn't deal with different length hairs anywhere near as well, also it does need a new foil every 18months.

I'm not sure what your budget is so have no idea what you deem to be cheap or expensive.

I recommend the Remington MicroScreen3 TCT RS8986 Electric Shaver. It's discountinued now so it may be difficult to find but it's very good. You may be able to pick it up for around £40 for the whole kit (it cost more than twice that when it was generally available).

I don't like using eletric shavers as my skin is very sensitive but I did buy this one for a quick shave in the evening when I just don't have the time to have a wet shave.

It comes with a nice leatherette pouch for travel, a small cleaning brush, a foil cover and a mains charger. A full charge lasts 55 minutes of shaving. The foil head detaches easily and the cutters can be rinsed out in cold water, hence it's very easy to keep clean.

It's fairly compact and good to hold (i.e. very comfortable whilst shaving) and has a 'turbo' button for very stiff hairs - this basically speeds up the cutters whilst the button is held down.

    It's also got a pop-up cutter for side-burns.

All-in-all, I highly recommend this electric haver as I have very sensitive skin and using this shaver causes no issues whatsoever. It doesn't shave as closely as a wet-shave razor but not many electric shavers do.

The LCD screen tells you when it's time to clean the shaver, replace the foil head and the minutes remaining for the battery charge. It's a quality electric shaver that will last many years and can be picked up for less than half of its original selling price if you can still find one.

    I hopes that helps!

    Taz
