Eek!! 5kw

We got a massive electicity bill a few weeks ago so I thought I'd add up my power usage...6000watts!!! Most of it is amps for my hi-fi (he he).

I was just wondering if anyone knows if its safe to run 6000 watts through one room, I've heard of people frying their wires and having to pratically take down the walls to replace the wires.

Any ideas?

5800 watts is 25A at 230V

most home electricity mains rings should be 30A.

25A is enough for seventeen and a half dual xeon 1U servers running flat out

Circuit breakers will trop out if you overload your mains.

Never really checked TBH Comes to £200-£300 a quarter. (for a whole house, noit just my PC and stereo ).

about 1000 units a quarter, which is about 465W. that covers two computers on 24/7, and 2 on in the evenings, plus the usual things like fridge, freezer, etc

Most rings are 32A as most are run in 2.5mm T&E. Radial circuits as in some new houses are rated at 16 - 20 A depending on cable size.

5800 watts, did you get that from the stickers on the equipment? If so, then that is the Max wattage, not normally the nominal running wattage. eg One of your amps may be rated at 500W according to the sticker on it, but you only run it at 1/4 volume most of the time so it will not actually draw 500W of power.

5800w is a lot to have in one place on one ring main considering you may have (depending on design) a whole floor or even a whole house running off that same circuit!

One device will never draw enough to max the circuit, but yeah if for some reason you overload it. The circuit breaker will flip off.

Good point, its pretty much imposible to crank my amps as they mess with your ears.

Its just like if you have the kettle, toaster, microwave, oven, washing machine, dish washer, sandwich toaster etc on all at the same time in the kitchen it can blow the fuse as its using so much. Oh a nice little bar heater on as well lol

i really don't believe the 5KW figure. that's 10,800 units a quarter. electricty is about 10p a unit, so over a £1000 bill. is it really that high?

I don't leave it on 24/7. It consists of 2x 2000 watt amps, a few keyboards and a stage piano, my computer and a few sets of computer speakers as monitors. As i said i only use the gear for a few hours a day.

Bet your amps run at maybe 300watts total most of the time. 4000 watts is crazy

yeh probably, theyre pa amps rated at 2000 each but i so rarely crank them it doesent count.
