How would i get into Forensic Computing?

I've always fancied getting into a company whereby I could use computers to do forensic'y type stuff.

I left school at 16 (now 20), worked at Tekheads as their RMA guy (Hardware Tech) and since leaving then have done Software Support for Natwest and am now an IT Assistant (IT Admin role).

I dont know if I can do this all my life.

I have no qualifications and no money to sort my own training out. Nor do I have the money to be jobless and goto university.

    What options would I have?

To be perfectly honest, I cant stand the way of life in the UK and would love to leave, but I have so many plans and not enough willingness to action them. I also have no money to just dump everything and go.

I would love to do something 'forensic' be it using computers to look over evidence for prints etc... or actually using computers to track/search/trace naughty people.

Does anyone do a job like this? Or does anyone know of companies who do this?

I realise I have so much to look into, and its probably something I am never going to be qualified enough to do. But im interested in looking into it...

I work with people who do this for Vodafone and have done a basic forensic pc investigators course. To be honest I was going to apply for an investigators role in that team but the level of qualifications they required meant that the company would have had to spend about £25000 training me and it would have taken some time. I decided against it and I'm trying to go down the route of getting a secondment to the team and learning through experience.

Some companies go down the route of just employing Encase bunnies, i.e. people who know how to run Encase but have no clue as to why or what they are doing. We don't work like that, it's important to know why you do something a certain way and consequences if you don't. That way you won't get caught out under cross examination

What do you mean? Do you mean why do they do forensics at a telecoms company? Or do you mean how do they do forensics?

If you dont have a degree you would be elligable for a grant to pay for it, also, if you wanted to get away from the UK, having a degree would be really usefull, you could go on to do a masters in another country and never come back Thants what I fancy doing any way.

paying for the degree would be ok, but what about the car, rent and general living costs

i think i may wait till my cars paid off then look into it. (2 years)

mcse training etc is on the horizon at my current place, so maybe if i can get that in. i might be in a better position. and still only be 23.
