    What would you do?

Ok, ive jsut moved into a new flat with my uni mates. Great flat but one problem. The lady above me is partially deaf and has her TV stupidly loud, and it goes through floor so it basically sounds like ive got my TV on. Im currently in the middle of resits so it really isnt helping trying to revise. My room is what used to be the lounge so im right above her TV.
The choices im sturggling to make are that
A: I dont like confrontation so was thinking of ringing the block of flats owner/company
B:IM a student so there are going to be some nights where im louder than normal, so dont want to take the piss by havinga go at her

Thing is its been a week now and it is actually unbarable, the base in unreal and ican hear EVERY word on her tv

    Wot would u suggest guys

Sounds a tricky one, if you report her to the flats owners, (even if she does not know its you) she might just start reporting anyone thats noisy just to get her own back...

Is it not possible to move into another room or go to the LRC/library to study?

Just ask her really nicely, tell her what times you'd like to study and ask her if she could try to keep it down between those times.

You never know, she might be lovely and you might even make a new friend.

    Earplugs.

No, really. That, or listen to some classical music through closed earphones.

I used to have a similar problem and I just went to a library - that was ace as there were less distractions there too, and unlike my room it was a place that, to me, was SPECIFICALLY for work.
I understand that it's not always possible to study elsewhere though.

If she has the TV on for the whole day, she probably isn't watching it. Just go up and give her a sob story, asking if she would just turn it down if she could, or at least off when she isn't watching so that you can get some work done.

You may have to speak up when you talk to her, though

    Good luck!

Yeh library is the right place to go study, but i like having msn on and potential gaming in the background. ( iknow my discipline is dire) hense resits. But yeh if i go and ask her nicely, she jsut say " yeh im deaf, i need it up loud" i cant turn around and say put headphones on. I recon she could jsut have the base on stupidly loud. Hmmm nightmare

I like having MSN on... but I also want a career and therefore am willing to go to the library and not use MSN for a while?

No offence, but if you are already in the situation where you are doing resits, maybe it is the time to head to the library and do some real work?

What about listening to classical/instrumental music?
Or at least TRY talking to her?

hahaha yeah i am the same, although i get more done in an hour in the lrc than a full day at home,....so a few days aint gonna kill you

your situation is a tough one you want to keep her sweet as i can imagine she will have to put up with you coming back in at 2-3 am weekends drunk and loud ......

i have to have silence when i study too, if people are talking i end up listening to them in the lrc, so i have classical music on the ipod at low volume.

Or...... you could do the following.

Buy her a pair of head phones and maybe a long 3.5mm jack extension lead so she can watch all the tv she can from her chair while her headphones are connected to the tv. This will solve the following problems and give you a few advantages:

    1) The tv volume won't be up high and therefore wont disturb you. Main problem solved.
    2) The woman will see you as a friendly person, you've pretty much automatically got her on your side and will feel happy with you as her neighbour.
    3) She won't be able to hear you during your drunken student nights as she will have her headphones on with the box cranked up high.

    It's a win-win situation I tells ya.

Break into her flat when she's out. Break the volume button.

    If guilty:

go to teletext, type in 888.

    You're laughing!

Get her a piece of carpet to put under TV.

Befriend her, help her (that nice young man downstairs...) and explain the problem nicely.

    Earplugs

    Closed headphones and gentle music....
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.
