    This is how we talk

Ive met a few people from the forums since I joined some 5 odd years ago. One of the things I commonly get asked is “what did you just say?”
The problem? I come from the Black Country. Calling someone from the Black Country a “Brummie” can be a fatal mistake, depending on which town you are in.

Dialects are incredibly strong. Entire sentences can be shortened to a handful of words.
The university I attend is only about 20 miles from my house, but being in a different county (Staffordshire), my first week there was just a haze of people asking “what did you just say?” and “sorry, but I cant understand you”.
You see, its not just the dialect that’s the problem, it’s the speed that its spoken – its incredibly fast. Forgetting to drop my accent and talk “Queens English” can put your average interviewer into a state of shock. I think the first time I spoke to Zak, he almost had a breakdown

Hopefully, this guide will come in handy for any of you Hexites that happen to stumble upon this area, or ever meet me. If not, it should provide a few giggles and laughs on how we talk
Ill be bringing a printed copy for Lee when we go to Creamfields – hopefully.

Cor goo awt tonawt, thee nuss aas gota comen av a look at thee oss.
    Would translate as
I can’t go out tonight, the nurse has got to come and have a look at the horse.

    Its a funny old world

I've been informed I do have a slight (yeah, thats right emz......slight) tinge of the black country accent........up until recently I thought I spoke fairly well for a yam yam but the wool has been pulled from my eyes I can tell yah......

Mind you.....when I was dicussing my new found accent in the pub I asked if anyone thought I had a really strong accent and according to my mate Holly I sound distinctly nothern........

    So who knows......

Working offshore, i've met and spoken to lots of poeple for all over the country. I've not had problems with understanding anyone form the black country going by that page

People always ask where i'm from, don't sound like an Aberdonian (thank god.... no offence meant to anyone that does )

QFT. My girlfriend is from Dudley and anyone who makes the mistake in saying she's from Birmingham wishes they hadn't!

P.S Where abouts in the Black Country you from Agent?

So, are you called Ely or Enoch then?

Think Glaswegians are similar - it's not just what is said but the speed that it's said at.

I live in Albrighton in the West Midlands and there are a lot of towns and citys near me with distinct accents, Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Dudley etc.
They all sound pretty awful in my opinion.

Accents I love are Scottish and Irish, I could just listen to them for hours!

Strange thing about me personally is I have no accent, maybe due to a lot of travelling I've come up with some sort of universal accent suitable for all countries.

You could, but something has pop-up I cannot get out of and as such I'm not going to creamfields - shame, but I'll use the cash for 4 night's at The Warehouse Project instead

Anyway, I can understand 90% of accents - it's just the broad welsh and Rab C Nesbitt Scottish accents I have issues with
