    What is this number/company ?

Came home to a phone message today:

"Hi, this is Steve from DPS. We currently have a message awaiting your collection. To collect your message please call 0871 2040196 and speak to one of our live operators"

A little bizarre? Never heard anything like it before... nor does Google pick up any company for the phone number... other than the fact 0871 numbers are free and available to anyone...

    Anyone any ideas?

Just stay away - why would they have a message for you anyway ? Thats what your answering machine is for.

If it's really important they'll write you a letter.

I once had something like this when I owed paypal money, (well i didn't, but paypal were convinced i did). I just waited for the letter.

heard recently about royal mail-type cards being left on doorsteps, for undelivered parcels.

"Phone this number to confirm collection" etc - once you do, it takes 50 quid off you there and then, ie total scam. Seeing as this requires an 08701 number, who knows? If it were 0901 number, would be obvious ripoff, but 0870 numbers usually are legit.

would prob not phone it meself........

IIRC, yes, £1.50/min is the maximum call rate.

    DPS Message

    Hi,
    Newby here!!!

I just found this forum after googling 'DPS Message scam'!

The message you had and quoted from 'Steve' is 100% identical to a message we were left today too.

I'm guessing that this is a scam and the fact someone else got this message word for word seems to confirm that guess - so thanks for posting.

    Anyhow - hello!

I am guessing this is something to do with you calling them back and they hold you on the line for ages thus making a little money. May have something to do with a 'big prize' they they hope you will hold on long enough for.

Ask the local police station to take a look and sort it out.

0870 numbers are national rate numbers. They can be fairly expensive to call - sometimes as much as calling mobiles but they are not premium rate numbers.

They used to generate revenue but that side of it was removed some time ago, to the best of my knowledge. Hence, I would be surprised if the 0870 number would be used to kepp you holding online for ages to generate revenue for the owner of the number.

It's more likely that they will scam you in some aother way when you call up. You could complain to BT (or whoever your phone line provider is).

I never call back a number that is not a proper geographical number (i.e. one that can be traced to a real address).

You could always register with TPS, should stop most marketing / scam calls originating from within the UK! Stopped me getting "Sorry this service is not designed for answer phones!" being left on my voicemail at home!
