I did 7 years of full contact Wu Shu Kwan when I was a lot younger. I no longer have the time required for it. Martial arts requires a lot of commitment and dedication but is well worth it if you have the time to spare.
I wouldn't worry about how you're going to look. Everybody, regardless of age and fitness level, starts at the bottom (usually white belt) and progresses through periodic gradings.
sawyen what are ur thoughts on wing chun? where/who did u train under
Jujitsu when I was younger, and for the last few months I've been doing (or trying to) Kendo.
I did some Hung Kuen when I was young , and really enjoyed it. Very good for people can't kick , even if their life is depends on it.
I wasn't trained in the UK, but if you're still interested to know.. I was trained under Master Yang Zhen which incidently is from China and moved to Australia.Originally Posted by Ben_
Wing Chun can be very artistic, acrobatic or very brutal. Depends where you're actually training towards. Depends who you train under as well. Master Yang is fairly efficient, and is more towards health improvements and alot subtle in style, fairly good for big guys who cant jump around so much. But note however, its not as stiff as shaolin or as fluid as wushu.
I have seen others from schools which trains full contact with sparring done every week. Unlike TKD or tournament style karate, Wing Chun does not have that many rules or the silly point system. So if you followed a master which teaches good full contact wing chun, be prepared to get hurt...
Overall 7 years was very rewarding. Sometimes, the stuff you learn becomes second nature. Not perfect, but blocking and counter seems a little more natural. Having said that, my training contained very little sparring. We only have some sparring sessions every 1/2 months.

I currently do Muay Thai Boxing, Keysi Fighting Method (a mixed martial art), Jeet Kune Do, Combat Submission Wrestling (basically BJJ and JKD with a bit of everything else thrown in) and Escrima (stick and knife).
I have also done Shotokan Karate, Judo, Taekwondo and freestyle Kickboxing.
It does eat around 8 hours a week of my time though.
Love it!
