    Unhappy Poorly written post/replies, why?

    All,
    Now I don't profess to have amazing English skills, but I do take the time to check the majority of my posts to ensure they make sense. I was wondering why all other people don't do this? (Please note, I know some people do this)

    The number of replies/posts that you can see on our forums that contain miss-used VB code or simply do not make sense is astounding. I mean, does it really take that much time to check over a post to see whether any quotes you may have done actually work or that a person who tries to read the post can understand what you are trying to say. In my opinion, the worst example of this is very badly written posts where people are asking for help - now tell me why I should help when I have to spend more time decrypting the post that I would actually providing a solution?

    Please, I implore you, take some time to check your posts!

    /Rant off

    Sorry about that, it was starting to grind me a little

    Leon

    I'm pleased you agree Zak, I was beginning to think it was just me being picky.

    Hexus does have an outstanding reputation; when the forum is littered with badly written and nonsense posts, it really does reflect badly on Hexus and will put people off from joining the community.

    This topic gets discussed every now and then. There is no excuse for a poorly-written, difficult to understand post. It may be easy for the poster to understand what he/she has written but others may have no idea what they're talking about!

    I would imagine that some posts may be extraordinarily difficult to understand for those whose first language is not English.

    Personally, I find 'text speak' and poor grammar very annoying. Long posts should be split into paragraphs. Blah, blah, blah...

    "Ye I is got some bling, dawg, phat chromes strapped in 5-4s, ye u no what I is talking bout! Peace out all!" - I don't really mind how people write as long as it doesn't turn into something to the equivalent of this, which is barely even english (to my standards). I try to write correctly when I type, but sometimes I post at early hours in the morning .

    Steve you pedant

    (yes, I know there's no punctuation, but I thought you'd have such fun pointing it out)

    Another 'agree' from over here. Perhaps we should start a 'I'm sorry, I don't understand' reply policy to anyone who obviously hasn't even bothered to check what they've written.

    I don't entirely agree.

    To my mind, a forum is a place for communication, not formality. Yes, broken quotes (etc) is very sloppy practice, but my criteria is whether the meaning is clear or not, and not the technical perfection of spelling, grammar, typing or editing.

    Occasionally, I've seen requests for technical help written in a "stream of conciousness" style, i.e. no punctuation, no grammar, no capital letters, no sentences or paragraphs, etc ... just a stream of words. After you've read it, or rather, tried to decipher it, several times and still aren't entirely sure what's being said, my reaction is to give up and ignore it.

    Having done that some number of times, I now figure that if someone can't be bothered to put in the effort to explain their problem clearly, I can't be bothered to put in the effort to try to help them.

    HOWEVER .... if it's just mispelling, or perhaps even mistyping, I really don't care. My criteria for a forum post is "is the meaning clear?"

    On the other hand, if you advertise a job and get 200 applications, you're pretty certain to apply a fairly crude filtering process to whittle that down to manageable numbers. My personal favourite is people that claim to have great attention to detail ..... in a CV full of blatently obvious spelling errors . They could at least have run the damn thing through a spell-checker.

    So it's horses for courses. Not everyone has good grammar or good spelling, but that doesn't make their opinion any less valuable .... or worthwhile. Some people also don't have much spare time. I'd rather they spent it saying what they want to say, than checking and rechecking their posts to ensure perfection. Yes, errors grate on me, but they grate a lot less than having people not post at all for fear of being nitpicked about it.

    I especially hate the misuse of code. People putting [imghttp://www.website.com/blablabla.jpg] or [/quote=insert quote here]. Not really on here (although i did see a misused img tag the other day on here), more on other forums i go on. Even if you don't preview the post first, once it is posted and you are shown, surely you can see it's wrong, in which case edit it!

    I think a polite reminder to someone who's messed up their code would be fine - likely they don't realise it's broken and/or don't know how to fix it.

    Bad writing though is more of a bugbear for me (that should be 'Well spoken' Zak ). It's not that I can't understand what's being said, just that I prefer the forums to look professional and I can more quickly gather information if the writing is correct. It really is easier to read books that use capitals, punctuation, paragraphs and proper language etc. correctly.

    I do hate these sort of threads because you feel that extra pressure to get everything correct

    I think that as long as you make the effort then it's appreciated

    It's only people who can't be bothered or who go out of their way to obfuscate the writing that lessen the readability and look of the forums.

    As Saracen said, ultimately it's about being able to understand posts without having to get the code wheel out. It's also nice if people write fairly well, so that they don't come across as complete spoons.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();
