    Microsoft is really interferring.

My friend comes on MSN. He sends me an MP3. (Should that be "a mp3" or "an mp3"? Because "a mp3" does NOT sound right!) Right. Back on track.

Windows has blocked this file for your safety.

Pardon? Piss off. It's an MP3 not a loaded gun. Jeez.

Anyway. I figured a way around this. It's annoying but it works (Don't click ok - Navigate to My Received Files, cut the file, paste it elsewhere THEN click ok)

I then decide to send my friend the database I'm working on.

Windows will not let you send this file because it is potentially dangerous. Enable anti-virus or download MSN scanner (or whatever it is)

Now I turned off the anti-virus cause I'd had enough of it popping up everytime I sent/recieved a file.

I click to download the scanner.

    I get it.

    My friend is offline.

    ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Why are Microsoft putting all these annoyances in all their programs? AND can you turn it off MSN?

get mess patch, it has many useful things (imo) such as getting rid of the adverts etc, and disabling the file transfer.

It depends what version of msn you have though, i just gave the link for the newest version (8.1.0064 or 8.1.0066)

    for version 8.0.0812 here

I've used mess patch for around 3 years and it's really good.

Just stick the files into a .zip archive or .rar archive. That used to work and it works on hotmail as well when sending attachments. At least it used to.

Yup, that ought to do it. I prefer to send files as .zip, they're less likely to get blocked.

    People people people.
I'm not looking for a solution to this. I know a few, what I'd like is a permanent solution. As for changing IM programs, I doubt my 150 friends would do this, and SKYPE? Made by the company that bundled their last program with what was the first spyware I ever saw?

I get 1kb a sec with skype too, and yes both firewalls have been set up correctly.

Anyway Bazzlad, what's wrong with messpatch that's a permenant solution Or the only other thing is the file extension unblocker

Mess Patch is installed now mate. (Cheers ) Will try it out later

I'm just shocked at MS new policy of locking everything down so the stupid few don't get burnt. They should have least have "Expert" settings.

I got one of those messages after receiving a JPG, it told me I would just need to right-click and "unblock" the file to open it so I pressed OK, and it totally deleted the file. Excellent.

As I was using the beta version I sent a message off to MS asking them what they honestly thought the risks of opening JPGs were and how to turn it off.

Their answer? "There's no option to turn it off, we will pass this along to the technical team."

    Cheers for the patches guys!

Tell me about it, I was expecting a bit more of a difference from XP Pro vs XP Home, other than remote desktop, some permission settings, and domain joining.

The fact is that Pro treats you with the same kid gloves as Home does. I'd liked to have seen it come out of the box with all the advanced modes enabled (simple file sharing turned off etc).

I'm not sure what market Microsoft are targeting at the moment with their Operating Systems, the "pro" versions don't seem professional enough for business use without a dedicated IT team, and the Home versions come out of the box with no way of playing a DVD, no way of managing photos, and no calendaring application.
