I received my first charge for a failed S/O about a month back (Natwest). Phonned them a few times but it always went to the call center so sent them a leter on tuesday, still waiting for a reply/refund.

Hoping it will be a straight forward refund, my first charge and i'm only 17 (Not sure if they're even allowed to charge a 17yr old?)

Just to let people know my dad did the exact same with his bank and he got over a grand. So if you've been charged alot by the bank in the last 6 years its well worth it. Before he went to court they offered him £600, he refused waited 2 months and got the full whack

    Legally no.

There's a section on that site I linked. Yours should be refunded nearly instantly. STATE that you're under 18.

Someone I know got charged 3 times by HSBC for going slightly over her overdraft. When I say slightly I mean a few pounds. Each time it was just a couple of days before she got paid. She went to the bank manager and told him about it. He refunded all the charges and extended her overdraft.

We're in the process of taking the Woolwich through this...

My resolve was reinforced today when I got a letter telling me a DD for 2.99 was returned as I had only 2.70 in my account.

That cost me £35... as all their charges do.

Not too worried about them closing the account as I've opened a new one up elsewhere.

For all i can remember Natwest only charged me twice so its only £70. Not sure if i will go ahead with this but the last time they charged me really pissed me off... especially because it was THEIR fault i had no credit to pay the bill!!!

Also £70 would probably finance a nice hangover…

Everyone should do this - particularly if you don't like your bank and have had a lot of charges over the last few years.
Fortunately i've not had to do this as I've only had one £10 charge from Nationwide, and I don't want to sever ties with them over that!

If they close your account complain to the banking ombudsman, who i believe can force them to reinstate your account and possibly compensate you for your grief.

It is in the nature of the beast to make money by any means necessary. It is still awin win solution for them, lot of corporate clout.

Ah, no... it might actually result in the DROPPING of bank charges.

You see, the whole thing hinges on the fact that the banks charge when something goes awry with your account, such as returning a DD or you go over your authorised overdraft limit.

Now the fee they charge, in the case of the Woolwich, is £35, though there's no actual COST of £35 to them... so they're profitting from their own rules... and grossly overcharging for a cost which is, in fact, negligible... which is unfair and unlawful.

It's those last two words that are winning loads of people their money back.
