    Exclamation Tesco Software

    From the Beeb
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/5396488.stm
Tesco is to launch a range of budget own-brand PC software, in a move that will pitch the grocery giant against the likes of Microsoft and Symantec.
How rubbish is this going to be? Or outstandingly good idea...?

This is ridiculous - ok so the up side will be the price, but what would you rather use, photoshop, or a tesco value equivalent? - no doubt the only colours available on there will be blue and white

They will probably be rubbish, but if they did manage a photoshop equivalent that is as good (for most people), then they could be onto a winner.

Equivalent to the games and applications you can buy from those twelve page mail-order catalogues you get in the paper.

    Likely going to be crap.

I doubt it would be from a Tesco software company they will just buy a program
from someone and then rebrand it.

I think it's scary they make £1billion PROFIT in half a year!!! I'm never, ever going to buy anything from them ever again if I can help it. I hate Tesco and no doubt their software will be crap anyway. That won't stop loads of people buying it though. Isn't google meant to be making a rival to office but it's all online?

I'm no fan of M$ but to be fair to them they have made an OS that has to work for pretty much any hardware you throw at it, works with old programs written for older versions of windows and makes up for major flaws in other software. In comparison you have linux, which has 1000s of people working on it and spotting bugs, it isn't very user friendly (although some distros are very good these days) and it usually takes a while for it to support the latest hardware. You also have Apple's OS that has to work on a very limited amount of hardware and has very few people attacking it because of it's small user base.

However, having said all that, there is still a lot wrong with windows xp but I just don't think it's as bad as every makes it out to be.

Personally I think its a good idea, I am all for competition. One of the major flaws with linux is the lack of marketing and mass market appeal, to the average person its strange and foreign, the preserve of the unwashed geek.

If tesco can create and market an equivalent at a low price then more power to them. Anything that opens up more choice to the consumer is a good thing. If they are able to market a low priced PC with their own OS and office suite etc and with their purchasing power and marketing budget they should be onto a winner. Provided of course their products are of reasonable quality.
