Break in, The buggers had off with our stuff again!

Dad just rang today, thurday night someone sledgehammered down the door into our store room at the back of our garage again. - This is the second time they've broken into the garage.

Last time was about a year ago, when they kicked the lock though the (admitdly weak) door frame, and pinch my old bike, worth about £50.
    - Slightly odd story, as i might of mentioned before, in that my new bike (worth about £500) was OUTSIDE the store room, locked up to itself only, with a weak £20 cable lock. So they walked past that, and broke odwn the door to get my old bike, even though all they would have had to do it pick up my new one.

But anyway, we repaired the door frame, and bulked it up with a large steel strip down the inside of the frame, screwed though int he main bulk of the frame with about 8-10 3inch screws.
    - We also looked at the door, which tho a relative cheap softwood door, looked fairly well designed, and certainly far tougher than the doorframe had been.
    - And invested in a very heavy chain and padlock to wrap around all the bikes and though the bike rack itself. As well as vowing to always use the bikes cable locks to induvidualy secure them to each other.

But non the less, this time thay still managed to get in, making absolute match-wood of the door, with about 20 serouse blows with very large looking hammer. And took off with the newish £400 petrol strimmer.

Again everyone was in the house at time, and heard nothing. And a again the police weren't at all interested, eather in trying to recover our stuff (unlikly) or even suggesting ways we could decrease the likly hood of it happening again.

    What a mess!

In the short term the local joiner has stuck the door backtogther. However we're now looking at replacing it with a security door, with a new tougher foorframe. And possably geting a alarm fitted to the garage.

Sorry to hear that, thieving scum

They must be determined thieves, not just opportunists if they keep showing up with a sledgehammer.

Seems like you are going to get broken into again, theives will come back if they know they are going to get something worth selling.

I'd get a proper security door fitted and an outside flood light above the door too.

sorry to hear about the thieves though, just maek that door inpenetrable. And definitely get some CCTV out there, an alarm should help as well. Costly but secure

best thing to do is leave it unlocked with nothing in it.

Leave a way of finding out if they come back (sellotape across the top of the door where it's hard to spot) and if they do, they'll realise you've given up.

    Well, deffornalty this time.
    - Although last time they acctaully used our hammer, which we had foolishly left outside.
    - So im pritty sure that was opportunists, without a car even, they saw my bike, saw it was looked, saw the hammer, and thought they have a peek inside.

But yeah, this i think they where fairly serous about it. Fortuatly all the bike where well locked up inside the store, and theres very little else of value in there.

We're deffornatly going to get a proper door and frame on it now, probebrly an outwards opening one as well. With a pair of mortice locks.

There is a pair of big powerfull PIR lights outside the garage/driveway, however the door in question is at the back of the garage (which has no doors) so we're deffonatly going to get a floodlight in there.

Not sure about CCTV, but we're deofnatly thinking of geting a alarm/sireon for the garage now. Possably a fake cctv camara.

In terms of dog. Thats deffonatly a relevent comment, because we used to have dogs, and both of these event where after stoped having a dog.
    - Unfortualtls, with me at uni, mum and dad working full time, and brother/sister at school 8-till-5 we cant have a puppy.

you dont actually have to have a dog, put some signs up outside that there is a registered guard dog on the premises and that should put a lot of the less determined pikeys off.

I really do feel for you
    I had 4 break-ins, and 3 attempteds (7 attacks) over 2 years.
    2 things I discovered -
    1. the next attack will take place soon after your insurance cover has had time to replace your lost goods, and
    2. Get a Dog

putting some signs up and a recording of some really nasty ferocious dog playing over some speakers in the garage would stop em.

The only solution to the problem lies with a double barrel shotgun although some well off lawyer would say this is detrimental to said scums human rights.

As long as the force is not excessive, and you are defending yourself (ie you dont shoot them in the back) then under currently legislation you are quite within your rights
