I may have to go live in sheffield and would like to know what its like there.
I want to live near to and within 10 minutes walk of the university (not hallum or whatever that ones called)
Whats the area like around there i.e. what are the dodgy areas to stay away
from. How close is the nearest large supermarket decent bus links.
any information to get started with would be helpful

Crookes & Broomhill are the main 'decent' sheffield uni areas. Then for a bit more upmarket, theres Ranmoor and around there.
There's a huge Morrisons and 24 Hour Tesco not far from either. (Penistone Road). The tram runs from the center to these, though Broomhill, Crookes and Ranmoor arent really on the tram route. Im sure you can get a bus from these areas to the supermarkets.

When I lived in West One, I cant remember hearing how many ppl wee while talking on the apartment building, not 3 floors down..

EDIT: On your questions, there's plenty of supermarkets around.. There's the 'everyone's-favourite' Tesco Express on West Street which is poo but everyone buys there because its awfully convenient. There's another Tesco's behind Broadlane, a little bit up to Arts Tower, there's a Jackson's-cum-Sainsbury's. Going down to the Moor, you'll get a 'bigger' Sainsbury's, Debenhams, Woolsworth and all. But all at tiny bite sizes (if you compare it with say Manchester)... Then you carry yourself down to Peace Gardens and.... oh well.. I'll just wait until you get there..

Ecclesall Road was good for bars/pubs etc, along with quite a few nice shops :)
Been there loads of times for work and without being nasty, my feeling for the place it bleak. Have seen it from the work and going out angle and I really wasn't impressed, actually I get quite depressed the moment I drive into the place, same feeling as I get when I go to Bradford.
Having lived there for 4 and a bit years, "bleak" is about the last thing I'd describe it as :)

I hear you there, I lived in Gillingham for a year and that was much worse! Never forget looking out of my window to see my car being forcefully winched onto the back of a 25 year old flatbed truck! Amazing what a baseballl bat says in a situation like that!
sheffield is a nice place to live really.. it wont have those big city feeling for sure.. but its a really nice place to live IMO.. Hunter's Bar.. London Road.. oh man.. and Bahn Thai.. that place is just ace...
I've lived there for 20 years until I came to uni, and let me tell you, compared to Middlesbrough (where I am now) it's brilliant! Of course I live in a place called Killamarsh which isn't the centre but still.
Stay away from Manor, Brightside, Burngreave, Spittle Hill etc and you won't get killed or robbed :p
And look at posh vini, living in Dore lol
and West One is a posh-wannabe stuck on a dirty West Street and Devonshire Green (which isnt very green to begin with)..
When I lived there, that place was literally extortion for the condition..
bit ot but have they finished that pointless metal wall thing around the train station yet? What a waste of money that looks like it's going to be.

I guess I can cast an opinion on the city, being an outsider that has visited on several occasions and stayed over a period of nights on each time.
My girlfriend has gone to uni there, and to her she is near enough "back home" as she was brought up in Bradford before moving down here (Baldock, North Herts) with family. She loves it, the night life, the people, the crap weather (everytime I have been it has rained, I think it knows I dislike it :P)
For me, its a complete change, Baldock mainly consists of a high street and Tesco, and of course I've visited big cities before, being so close to London, but never really spent more than a day there.
Getting around is a chore, for me, being used to the gentle rolling hills of the Chilterns, then walking from the train station to Ranmoor seemed like a hike. I mean seriously who ever though of building a city on a hill side, are they trying to scare us southerners away? Probably :crazy:
From what I've been shown, theres loads to do... if you like clubbing and drinking, neither of which I live for! The people are friendly on the whole, in comparison to Chavdom here. I don't drive, but I've been driven around the city when visiting. Its easy enough to get to from here, by train also (just change at Doncaster), but imo driving round the city is a nightmare. Hope you haven't grown too attached to your clutch, as there won't be much left of it ;) Get your hill start practice up to scratch too :crazy:
Ranmoor and Broomhill seems like a nice area, Ranmoor House uni accomodation has been nicknamed the prison by those I know who are there or have stayed. Very student-y, being so close to accomodation, and you'll have to learn to appreciate that theres going to be muchos drunken-ness around, at least there was on the last time I was up there, the infamous Medics bar crawl! From what I've heard Ranmoor is being knocked down soon though?
Talking of which, theres a lot of construction work going on but I guess its like that in a lot of up and coming cities these days. The centre is busy with a lot to do and nice places to eat, and theres some nice buildings and architecture and art lying around if you like that kind of thing, I don't particularly but its welcome none the less!
My girlfriend says I'm too critical of it, but having grown up in one house, all my life, in one town, in a completely different area and lifestyle, I think I'm bound to be.

u can always get bnbs... there's plenty around, say for example the Rutland Hotel a few buildings next to the Hallamshire hospital..
I like Sheffield, it has it's dull/bad parts but then so does any city, the centre is really nice and the bit of the south part that I've been to. Spent a bit of time up there this summer, it was great!
