worthwhile computing quals

So I'm trying to help my cousin in his computing career and he's asking me to help him find out what quals are worth doing. He has a year before he plans to do other things so can you guys provide some insight into what is recognised and can be done in this time. He also works full time so must be take in account.

I don't think the industry would like that. ECDL is for using things like Excel, and learning how to copy and paste a file. No, I'm not kidding, I've done one myself and I think I got 100% in it because it was that easy.

No-one would ever turn an eye to that kind of qualification unless you're going to be a receptionist

You can't just say "computing" career. This could mean _any_ field in computing. Be more specific

ecdl is easy, my sister got hers in less than 2 weeks and she is a simpleton. ecdl is also pointless, everyone can do it, but shows employers you can be arsed. depends what side of computing he wants to do? software or networks? CCNA/NP/VOIP = good money atm

My local college have dumped the ECDL in favour of ICT Level 1+2. Sounds about the same, but they seem to think it's better.

My AVCE in ICT was worth more than an ECDL for the fact that my AVCE took 2 years full-time whereas my ECDL took me a week

There-again, my degree is worth more

If it is a network career your cousin is looking into then i agree with Russ here.

My brother has got really far with his Cisco qualifications and is on big ££££ now, he has gone down the security route. I'm just starting my Cisco qualifications and ill be heading down the VOIP route.

ITIL foundation certification is a very good qualification to hold if you want to work for large companies as a pre-sales consultant, solutions architect or professional services consultant.

some of the cisco courses are good like dig said, but they're expensive
