Just how useful are online petitions?

Having seen the mess left in the fireworks petition fiasco, I got thinking about online petitions and how often people run off going "I'm going to make a petition about this!" and I was wondering what peoples views on them are.

Have you ever heard of one working?

If they are used then how do they overcome the "it could be faked" problem?
Sure you can fake a handwritten one, but not at hundreds of submissions per second, and then there's always the handwriting recognition hurdle.

Also, if not a petition, what would you use to make a point instead?
