Valid use of the word 'Cascade' ?

    Ok,

I have a question i would like to pose to people here, does the following sentence make sense to you, and provide a valid use of the word 'cascade':

"The management would like to cascade some information to everyone"

Answers on a postcard to the usual address (or a reply to this, either way):

    Shepy

It makes sense, but I would say it wasn’t an ideal way to say it. Just sounds like a typical management comment of trying to make something sound more complex than it needs to be.

Right, just no. Cascade means :

Definitions of cascade on the Web:

    * a small waterfall or series of small waterfalls
    * a succession of stages or operations or processes or units; "progressing in severity as though a cascade of genetic damage was occurring"; "separation of isotopes by a cascade of processes"
    * rush down in big quantities, like a cascade
    * shower: a sudden downpour (as of tears or sparks etc) likened to a rain shower; "a little shower of rose petals"; "a sudden cascade of sparks"
    * arrange (open windows) on a computer desktop so that they overlap each other, with the title bars visible

    here

Nowhere in that definition does it say to send email around a company, the word they are looking for is distribute.

I'd say it's a valid use of the word (just), but that there are a great many other words that are far more appropriate.
"Well, there was your Uncle Tiberius who died wrapped in cabbage leaves but we assumed that was a freak accident."

It's valid, just grammatically horrible and inappropriate for the subject matter.

"The management, would like this information passed on to all employees."

In the context of the original question, it is a well used business term

It refers to distribution of information by the method of passing info on to others in a pre-defined order, the idea being that important info can be rapidly spread from a single source.

For example, Sainsburys have a cascade plan in place should internal e-mail go down and an important message needs to go out. Head Office calls, say, five stores to start the cascade. Each store calls three others with each subsequent store calling three others and so on.

It was originally slated to be called 'avalanche' due tot he snowballing nature of the info being spread to more and more stores at each stage, but I think they went with cascade as it was already established as a business term

Well it's a rubbish 'business term' (are there any which aren't?). It's just another ugly, gratuitous noun->verb mutation. What's wrong with using 'distribute' instead?

In the new business paradigm, communication solutions like that are part of the modern manager's core competencies.

    I once enjoyed 'cascade training'.

This occurs when six people need to attend an external conference, but the firm only want to lose one day's worth of chargeable hours. The attendee is then responsible for 'upskilling' the non-attendees by cascading the knowledge

It should be disseminate, if you wanted to use management speak and actually make sense at the same time.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
