Fantastic Waste of an online system

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/11/28/pm_petition/

What a great way to ruin the credability of a system.

    http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/juggle/

    ha ha ha, very clever.........not.

what a pointless thing to do, now the gonvernment have more additional arguments to not listen to the public or take feedback seriously.
    It is Inevitable.....

Personally, I think it's entirely predictable that a lot of people would play silly buggers; it doesn't detract from the credibility of the serious petitions.

if the ice cream one ends up with more signitures, its a fair sign that the other one doesnt have much of a following..

Agree that it doesn't detract from the serious ones, that's like saying that the Monster Raving Loony Party or UKIP should be banned because they detract from serious politics. Anyway I've just signed (the ID card one)

I'd already signed the ID card one, but have added my sig to the road charges, pistol regs, and "add a none of the above to voting forms" ones, as well as the one asking that the means testing of legal aid in criminal trials should be abandoned. I'd really like to see more signatures on that one - http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/meanstesting/ .

Haha! Well I think it's funny. If the Tony Blair crew don't know who Tim Ireland is then there's something seriously wrong with their public relations already!

In case you're interested I signed the ID Card one but not the Ice Cream one for fear of my vote being regarded as "from one of the silly buggers on that Ice Cream page".

sorry, I'll clarify the credability statment.

Of course the credability of "should we increase road tax" will always be taken more serious than "should Tony stand on his head" style petitions.

    The danger is that

100,00000000 register for a worthy petition, then the argument is "people will register for anything, we had 200,0000000000000 register for the ice cream one"

Also if they cross check names/email address on them, and they find a name on the "topless women wednesday" petition, but also on the "flexible working hours for single mums" petetition then it sort of detracts from the credability of that poster.

i mean, if the ice cream petition got farked (it already may have done). then all of a sudden a huge amount of people who usually wouldn't care, or even know about it will sign it up just for the hell of it

thats true - another danger is idiots signing up for it because they think its funny and clever.

so if just for example, hexus posted a thread saying "show your support for road tax increase" then thats according to the stats 20,0000 potential signatures. A vast majority won't care or would disagree.

However if some IDIOT put on hexus "LOL sign up for Tony Blair juggling icecream" then you KNOW that a good proportition would sign up because they think its big and clever and "zany"

    (just an example)

there is always going to be tainting of these things with advertising/promotion of a cause close to peoples hearts, which is a good thing that people are looking for support and getting people who wouldn't know how to register support a voice, but it just dissapoints me that the headline of the article is basiclly morons messing around on gonvernment website" rather than "gonvernment listens to record high signatures on single parent tax releif"
    It is Inevitable.....
