If its anything like the 19" HannsG Monitors, then it should be a good buy

    No HDMI though...

You can just use computer monitors with the 360 via the VGA cable. Does he really need the tv functionality? If not, it will be cheaper to go for a TFT. I got a Samsung 20" Widescreen (205BW) for £190 for this.

If there is no HDMI then its not HD ready, the resolution is also only 1366 x 768 which isn't quite right...don't waste your money.

There is a nice 27" Goodmans HD ready set in tesco at the moment for only 370 thats HD ready, and you can problably find it cheaper online if you look.

A set doesn't need HDMI to be HD ready. There's several requirements, but in terms of connectivity it requires Analogue YPbPr, and either DVI or HDMI, and the DVI or HDMI input must support HDCP. This set has DVI, so provided the DVI supports HDCP and 720p signals (which the native resolution suggests it will), it would comply .... at least in that regard.

However, all this really proves is that "HD Ready" provides a minimum requirement rather than an optimal spec, and certainly not any form of assurance of quality (which I rather imagine is how many naive consumers will see it when they're looking down the rows of sets in Currys, or wherever), and that not all HD Ready sets are equal ... not by a VERY long way.

In answer to the OP's question (is it any good?), my answer, unfortunately, would be that there's only one way to tell, and that's to see it it use. I've seen some quite expensive (£2000 upwards) sets by major brand names (Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, etc) which, in my subjective assessment, were utter garbage and I wouldn't consider using them if they were given to me for nothing. Quite seriously, they've been that bad, particularly in terms of blur on action scenes, that I wouldn't want them as a gift.

When you say nice...how nice are you talking?

I heard the 24" Dell is still one of the best/cheapest for full HD resolution but i dont want to spend £600

Looking at about £300-£400, but not sure if losing out on full HD resolution is going to be a bad choice down the line

Nope. They all cost about the same to make, 90% of them are also rebranded from one of the few big manufacturers like samsung etc.. just like with pc lcd's. Big brands (like sony, who also make the crappest lcd's imo) are going to be spending a lot on advertising, which will cost more even though they use exactly the same panels as everyone else.

Competition is going to increase a lot this year and most manaufactureres will be lowering prices (by about 25-50%) after having earn back much of the fixed cost of manufactuering them, and also after good yeilds.

Those are all big companies and none of them have really made any good contribution to pc lcd's. Maybe wrong about toshiba becuase they do laptop stuff. Sony however, just suck - picture quality is pathetic and they also seem to be advertising the most.

There are lots more big brands to aviod. I would never touch anything made by the following companies - sony, goodmans, phillips, panasonic, daewoo, matsui, sharp, but there are plenty others to aviod. These are all companies that revolve around high street retailers.

However companies with good products are imo samsung , viewsonic, lg, .. more when i think of them.
