In what sense? Without software? Or recreate drag and drop with a third party bit of software?

You can't do it straight out of the box with Windows

Are you intending to do this with music, or for ordinary files, to use as a portable HD?

I'm pretty sure there is a way to get the iPOD so you can drag and drop music onto it but I cant find the link I was reading before... Ill see tomorrow if i have it bookmarked at work still

Get your hands on Yamipod and store it on your Nano's file storage space.

any windows computer you connect it will then be able to add/remove/edit music on the Nano without having to install anything etc

Works perfect, i still use itunes on my main computer but if i ever need music from someone else's collection i just plug the nano into their pc with the usb cable, go to the Nano drive under "My Computer" and open Yamipod.

No need to put anything on other people's PCs

How the hell do you get ipods (nano) out of disk mode?

I put it in disk mode and told iTunes i would manage my music manually, and now its no longer recognised in iTunes so I cant, yet want, to disable disk mode... Grr.

just reset them, holding down menu and center button (when its not connected)

if you want to put the nano into disk mode before its connected to anything. Just reset it and then as soon as you see the apple symbol on screen just hold center button and play for a couple of seconds

I managed the album art, it was easier than I thought but I did have to sign up to ITMS and that took a while.

You can change the software on your ipod to rockbox & then you can use drag and drop... See rockbox.org

I was a hardcore winamp user for 5 or so years without giving itunes a chance. But once you spend a day or so (depending how large your music collection is) making sure all your tags are correct itunes does work really well. But i still find myself playing single tracks on winamp
