Holiday

I'm lucky enough to have a girlfriend that is patient. As part of her Christmas present this year I said I'd take her away somewhere. Yes, part of, before I get slammed for not getting my girlfriend anything from the more oestrogen-filled members of the board - I did get her stuff to open on Christmas day

That does, however, leave me open to bashing from those who believe Christmas is too commercial. My witty comeback to that is, erm. You'd be going off-topic!

So anyway. I'm looking to go away around Easter time, that'll fit in with her uni break. Looking for 7-10 day trip max. Decent climate but nothing really above mid 20s or stupidly high humidity, I can't deal with heat. Cold is fine for me though, shame she is the opposite.

I guess budget is approx £750pp, so that leaves me with plenty of possibilities from a quick search. I'd definately like to try something a little bit different, hopefully my budget will accomodate. Shes been away to the typical places, as have I with a few others in the mix like Egypt. What I'm after is some suggestions for destinations and recommendations for tour operators and agents to use and to avoid based on your experience.

Being a John Lewis fanboy because of the warranty and service I generally get given when using them, I checked our their new greenbee.com service and have some nice deals on there. On closer inspection, it just seems to be a front end to Expedia? Of which I can't stand because whenever I've used it in the past I've found *nothing* in the dates I specify? Maybe I'm doing something wrong, plus I'd rather prefer something with a more personal touch!

Cheers!

Have you tried Croatia, that kind of money would get you a pretty nice hotel in a nice resorty area, Croatia seems to be the 'in' place this year.

I really liked Menorca in 2003, a nice quite sister island to Majorca (which has its nice parts too), its has beautiful beaches (search Cala Mitjana and Cala Galdana).

If you like it cold and she likes it hot, try Turkey, in some places you can be in a nice warm sea resort but only an 2 hour drive from a skiing resort.

Thats just Europe, but could try a Florida trip at that price maybe Miami, or St Petersburg always come back with glowing reports.

My parents found Egypt an interesting place, however they also said the army/terror presense ruined it a bit for them. They enjoyed the history, but found the casual sight of guns and massive humidity *they where in summer* too much
It is Inevitable.....

I want to go to Colorado and stop at the Stanley Hotel there.

Fingers crossed I will do nearer the end of this year

Anyway - I've been to a few places over the years with a few of the ex's but the best place I went to wasn't abroad, but the Lake District in Summertime.

True, the I'll second the Lake District, also North Wales around Snowdonia National Park is very nice in summer.

I'll 3rd the lake district. OK, so I'm a sucker for the traditional English break, but a good summer trip to the lakes is just brilliant. And I live in the sticks anyway...

Only catch is that Easter wouldn't really be much use in the lakes - it's likely to be quite damp and cool. Summer would be nice if you can stretch it that far though.

Sounds like you're after something a bit less traditional though, so I'll stop babbling.

Blimey Thobe, a lot of <3 to warrant a £750 trip! I would recommend the far east, because I've been there enough to know . Philippines is like £800 though and plus its sometimes unbearably hot.

£750pp will get you a nice hotel in the UK or eastern Europe. If you go for somewhere too far away the flight will take up too much of the cost and you'll only be able to afford a dive. Make sure you ask her about the place and make sure she's OK with it. If you surprise her and she hates the place you'll be miserable.

Bingo...

7 day caribbean cruise? if you go the end of march, £787? (try ovuk.co.uk) Before you say it's for fuddy duddys, Ocean Village is more like a floating hotel. I loved it.

Don't know how flexible your dates are.... and what they are!

I went to the caribbean for £718 3 years ago.

Bear in mind that all your flights, accomodation and food are paid for in that... the only other thing you might wanna pay for is the excursions, but they aren't too bad. and you don't have to do them.

As an "oestrogen-filled member" *ahem* I would love someone if they did that!

Inspiration!

I'm tempted to leave it last minute and see what deals turn up, neither of us are really desperate to go to XYZ.

Yeah I'm even tempted to try a cruise tiggerai! Was looking at Virgin Holidays last night but their site is naff for cruises, only give info on hotel stays. You have to call up for the rest. Watched a docu on the caribbean last night actually, Cuba looks lush. I think there was another "holiday" thread on here recently I lurked in talking about Havana etc.

We went on Ocean Village, fantastic holiday. think they have a bigger boat as of this year, and the old one has a new route round the adriatic/greece/turkey.

Or, go to Bulgaria - check the weather for your time of year though, because it gets very very very hot in summer.

Well, i stopped being a travel consultant about 4 months ago, and i seem to have forgotten completely everything!

£750pp is quite a generous amount, but bear in mind 2 things.

Easter is the second most expensive time of the year to travel
You havent stated which airport you are travelling from

these 2 things make a huge difference, especially if you can get away a week before the *spring break* which is generally the first of april till the 15th (most regions school holidays are now fixed to these dates give or take).
Airport is another biggie, if you can go from Luton or Gatwick, you tend to get excellent prices, same goes for Doncaster (if travelling with Thomsons). Not so much if travelling from Cardiff , Bristol, Manchester, East Midlands, Norwich etc. (Manchester cos its a hub and folks from all over travel from there).

Anyways, for the time of year and a decent temp, Crete or any of the greek islands, should be able to get a nice 4 or 5 star hotel HB for that, or maybe a cheeky AI deal.

Bulgaria, dont go AI, waste of money, beer and food is so cheap it will spoil you for coming home (expect prices to rise drastically by next year tho. Check out Balkan Holidays for decent deals here

Tunisia - Maybe a little warm, but you would get a fantastic AI deal in Port El Kantaoui for that price.

Goa - i dont know a lot about Goa, but the beaches are said to be superb, hotels are generally rather basic i think tho.

just trying to think a little out of the box here, maybe a city break is in order

Barcelona, Prague, Amsterdam, Rome, Venice, Paris, Munich.

again, bear in mind that city breaks tend to be more expensive in the long run, but perhaps cheaper flights.

any questions, fire them my way mate, i'll try and recall my old knowledge
