    Video game violence

    Hey hey all,

I'm currently doing a study on video game violence and there effects...

I would like to what you think about the violence displayed in modern computer games and the effects that they are having on youth.

e.g. Does playing GTA teach a child crimal activities...

Could do with 2 sides of the arguements so please go crazy.

    thanks

I suggest if you are doing a proper study that you consult the myriad of other papers which study this and also try to engage the companies and governing bodies involved.

You will not gain a decent answer here, not because the people here (they are great) but because I doubt there is anyone qualified to speak on the subject.

Since I have been playing Gears of War, I have started carrying a selection of guns and grenades. I also find it very difficult to walk anywhere without killing people.

I have also started doing a detour on the way home via the supermarket...why?

    Because it's the "Safeway".

I'd have thought the answer would be patently obvious, why else whould the game carry an 18 rating?
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

How about when parents buy there under 18 year old kids a video game which is clearly marked 18 and PLUS, then the kid reenacts out what he/she has seen in that game.

Take the game Manhunt for example.

The kid in the story was only about 16 or some thing like that, but the mother buys the kid an 18+ game then she has the cheek to moan about it.

It is a question of morals I feel.

Which parent that cares lets their child have a game that is not suitable for them in the first place. The certificates (especially the titles that have the enforced BBFC classification) are there for a reason. You cannot take a 12 yr old into the cinema to see a 15 or 18 cert movie and most parents would agree that they are not old enough. So why is it that children are allowed to purchase and play said titles like the GTA games which have an enforced BBFC 18 on them.

It all comes down to the child in the first place getting hold of the software from whatever source.

I don't really know about violence with the obvious exception of the Manhunt incident that was plastered across the news. I used to work for Game and as such had to check ages, whether the box had the BBFC roundel on it or if it was (as it was then) the ELSPA age guide. We stuck to them religiously and it used to make me angry when a kid we turned down came back later in the day with Mum or Dad to buy it for them. I would point out to the parents that the game was not suitable but the normal attitude in response was 'It is only a game and isn't real'. Some would get annoyed at the myself or a colleague because by refusing the sale earlier we had ruined their day by being dragged out to get it for them. I really don't understand the logic behind it. The ratings are there for a reason. Swearing, violence etc is the same in a game as it is in a film and should not be viewed by those who are too young to see it.

On another note I would say that games (violent or not) are very influencial. I used to play Sega Rally (the 1st one) all the time and it made me want desparately a Toyota Celica and a Lancia Delta and I still do.

Also I have this urge to dye myself blue, spike up my hair, put on read trainers and run very quickly around town whilst jumping on peoples heads and running round lamposts.
