    DJ Decks

Some of you may remember a while ago I wanted some decks. Well people umm'ed and arr'd so I never got any. I'm glad I waited.

Tomorrow I will be buying :

    2 x

    &

For those who don't know what they are, the turntables are Vestax PDX2000 Mk II's (compared to the mighty Technics 1210's), and the mixer is a Behringer DJX400. The turntables go for £650+ brand new, I'm paying £300 2nd hand. The mixer, I have no idea, I know Behringer aren't good and the crossfaders go quite quickly, but it is just to get me started.

Can't wait although I see this as another money pit on the horizon, as I'm already looking into a Pioneer CDJ200 or two!

Behringer in terms of audio quality, aren't actually that bad - its the build quality that lets them down

    Looking good mate

I'm only paying £30 for the mixer so I'm not too bothered aslong as it lasts me a month (next pay day!)

I paid £300 for the turntables, £30 for the mixer, and spent £77 on vinyl but I couldn't wipe the smile from my face.

Any kind of music with a bit of energy, trance, hardhouse, scouse house *runs and hides*, hardcore etc.

Over the moon with them though, starting to almost get the hang of mixing/beatmatching and I get up 2 hours earlier than I should for work just to have a play on them!

    EDIT:

I'm on Allen and Heath and CDJ 1000's now, but I had a behringer vmx 300 which was really good (apart from the bpm displays but I didnt buy them for that!)

Those Vestax decks are sound, great to practice with, nice direct drive and plenty of torque (Not up to sl1210 standard though!)..... are you a beginner?

Get a good set of carts/styli and you have a good set up.

What amp/speakers are you going to run?

Oh and get a decent pair of sennheiser headphones! Make all the difference!

hehehe so much fun, especially when you and a group of mates are round and the mix's get worse by the beer

enjoy them mate...i had to sell mine because i was spending too much time on them rather than doing uni work.

Edit : to the headphone comment, i heve never used sennheiser's but i kept my RP-DJ1200's when i sold my decks, i now use them on the pc... well worth the money mine have been ran over/kicked/stood on sooo many times and still work....they also take soooo much abuse sound wise.. best £120 i ever spent.

Yeah the BPM counters on my mixer suck, so I'm learning all by ear. Best way really! Oh and the crossfader sucks

Some people believe the Vestax are better, other's believe the Technics are. I'm not fussed, because as you asked, I'd never even tried beatmatching til I got them so yeah, I'm a complete beginner.

At the moment I'm just running it through a phono to 3.5mm jack into my PC, and using cheap JVC headphones.

I started mixing about 6 months ago now, really got the hang of it now however the error rate is pretty high compared to my mates who have been at it for donkeys, to be expected tho really.

My neighbour has those Vestax decks (and a pair of CDJ1000mk3's, git!!), I had a play with them and they are decent but I will be going for Technics when budget allows (April I think, )

This is what I am using at the moment :

Citronix PD1's and a Kam scratch pro 150, also got some Kam diamond tipped needles for xmas and some Sony DJ headphones. Its enough to learn on, and really you do not want to spend a grand on a setup when you aren't even sure if your gonna like it/be any good at it.

Behringer are ok. They just steal other peoples designs and build them with cheap materials. Fair do. It means they can sell stuff REALLY cheap .

Fair play, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I've used these for approx 4 hours, and I absolutely love them! Would never give them up and if one broke I'd do my very best to replace it! It really is an obsession, and I've had them 2-3 days!!

Nice setup. My main mistake is either knocking the needle or catching the start/stop button! Oh, and my terrible mixing...but as said, I'm still learning!

I know, really hate the mixer, when i put the crossfader to the middle, you can hear the sound drop, its difficult (ie i need to mess with the channel volumes) to get the right mix of each channel.

They usually work well because they steal from the best . They just break easily. Sometimes you come across something they actually designed. THEN your in trouble .

You might find a way around that is avoid the crossfader altogether and use the upfaders instead. They all drop the volume as you move them across, the only way to keep both records at the same volume is to keep the fader off/in the middle and both faders up. Works well for me although you may find it harder to beat-juggle, I usually just grab the fader for the channel that I am mixing out, stick one of my fingers half way down and dropping it to halfway and back up again.

well at the age of 21 im sure its a lot easier to afford them being able to get a job, but when you 16 nearly 17 at college and live in a town which barely has shops let alone the jobs in them, its a pain in the arse.
