    when you have a cold...

Do you help your body get all the gunk out, or do you sniff and swallow it back down?

a friend just pointed out that when you swallow it your body digests it, but is that the right way to do it?

i would have thought just getting it out of your body was best, i mean...why else is your nose running?

just as well my brother isn't a member, this is his current pet topic now he is being Radiography at uni (first year is a combined general medicine/biology/psychology course).

Get the stuff out, thats what what your body is deigned to do. The gunk is germs and bacteria that the body is getting rid of, do you really want to eat that back down?

You just posted another thread about suspect meat. You are concerned about eating bacteria from that, but apparently not bacteria/germs your body is actively trying to get shot of

Hold your breath and swallow it, it tastes like crabmeat sweetcorn soup. But I don't think it's good for your health.

I won't swallow it . By doing that it may led to infection and some time they stuck on to the back of your mouth

Is this turning into hypochondriacs' corner??

I would've thought the gunk is already loaded with white blood cells (combining with other bits to make pus), not great stuff but it means your body's already identified it as 'bad' and is attacking it so swallowing or spitting (there's probably a whole other thread in there!) wouldn't have too much of an effect either way....

The other side to think of is that if you're spitting or coughing it out then you're probably spreading the virus more efficiently to other people.

    I'm not a (medical) doctor so I don't know..

I don't see swallowing it as being that bad, your stomach is full of acid so whatever's in there will probably be killed in seconds anyway.

Like pollaxe said, spitting it out is only likely to spread it to other people. If you don't have a controlled method of disposing of it (i.e. tissues flushed or chucked on the fire) then swallowing it must be more hygenic.

If you blow your nose you tend to blast the germs into every available nook & cranny increasing the infection rate. Swallowing it does you no harm, but if you must, spit... well that's what I tell the wife...

Almost a PhD, so a Doctor of Philosophy (hopefully, soon, anyway..)

Apparently I'm a Doctor in Transit as I'm in the re-write stage of a PhD in History and though I've passed my viva I've still got to get the thumbs-up on the final thesis.. (should be by the end of January).

As for being a Time Lord.. I admit nothing!

"Suck" it in to your mouth, then swallow or spit.

Since a cold is just an infection of your upper respiratory tract (nose and throat), blowing your nose refills your sinuses with bacteria/virus-containing mucous and just prolongs the infection.

Moving nasties our of that area should (in theory at least) make things a bit easier for your immune system to take care of.

So according to all the experts here that have had no medical training, the lecturers at RGU teaching first year medicine are wrong?

    interesting.
