    Motivation

What do you do for motivation?

I've got a terms revision to do for Economics and Politics (and a brief flick over Computer Science) for Wednesday - but also CS coursework as yet unstarted bar the DFD . Should I just have a go and try to get in the frame of mind or what - procrastinated three weeks already.

To be honest matt I never revised like your supposed to. Occasionaly I sat there and just read my work the night before an exam for a refresh but thats it; I always believed that if you havent learnt something over a long period of time, you wont have much luck within a few weeks.

However as I now try (note try) to write stories for scripts to pitch to big companies I must motivate myself to work.

So firstly turn everything distracting off, phone, music etc.. and clear your head of all un-important chores or things you could be doing and then just sit there and look at your books and read, give yourself a set time (hour) and reward yourself with a break of 20minutes and repeat.

Your brain will switch off after about 4-6 hours anyways, so theres no point just staring at a book and not consuming.

You know, I was going to reply to this thread a few days ago, but I couldn't be bothered.

The only tip I have is that if I start the day distracted, it's much harder to get into a working mindset. So if I leave some work out the night before, preferably right in the middle of something, first thing in the morning get straight back to it. When I was studying that Ideally meant straight after I make my first coffee and before breakfast. I'm always happy to wait an hour or so for breakfast anyway.

When I'm going to work I find that if I read the Metro or a novel, rather than dosing or reading a textbook, it takes me twice as long to get started when I get to work, because I sit down and read the BBC/Hexus/web-comics before I start work. If I read a textbook, I have computing on the brain, sit down, fire up Visual Studio and I'm off.
They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.

I studied for a PhD and it was very, very hard to do - mainly because I was working at the same time; so coming back to do research after a day's work was a right pain.

I think motivation is linked to a couple of factors: your interest in what you're doing and how stubborn you are. I'm fairly stubborn and don't like quitting on anything and I don't like stuff to beat me.

When I was an undergrad I inevitably wrote all my essays during the early hours of the day they were to be handed in; fear of failure was my motivator, I suppose!

    Good luck anyway!

Steve: lol! I know some mates who had their pic taken with them when they were kids

as for motivation.....the £1300 im going to get from my university every year for getting above the passing mark is motivation for me

I should get it in Feb too, w00t!!! new pc upgrade coming my way

have you tried to reward yourself through a timetable, say do 5 hours of revision and then play a game for an hour or something? It works especially well when you have something you want to play, good way to practice self control too

(oh and out of 5 hours revision you are probably going to get about 2-3 hours of actual work done if you do it reasonably well)

You'll find advice to help you not get distracted all over the place but one important thing to remember is when you've successfully done a section of work, reward yourself, and if you haven't stuck to your work then don't.

It may sound silly but if you get it into your head that a decent working session in the morning means you can go out with your mates in the evening, you'll soon find the work more appealing.

Motivation is a hard one, especially when the rewards are not instant. Visualisation is very very important when it comes to this and the enjoyment of what you are doing is paramount to your success.

Visualisation - Where is this going to get you, when is it going to get you there, when are you going to reap the rewards of your labour. Do you like cars, driving the latest flashy number every day isnt going to happen unless you put the work in now. Computers, the latest and greatest hardware, the choice of consoles and of course the TV/plasma etc you are going to watch them on. Its about putting yourself in the picture of where you want to be in the future.

Enjoyment - well, this is the trickier part, getting to enjoy the thing you are working at, and its not easy. I'm a salesman, i enjoy what i do, but sometimes its a real real drag, lots of paperwork and beaurocracy which i cant stand. But, i enjoy helping people, getting the right product to the right person etc, it makes it worthwhile, so look at the more positive side of what you are doing and then think of other things you could be doing (cleaning toilets, being read your rights by the cops, being Big Bubba's cellmate) and realise that what you are doing aint so bad after all

Got back to school; Tuesday night and just having sat down and got on with it helped. Couldn't escape the work so just have to do it.

Got a very kindly worded postcard from someone I've been communicated with in Parliament and that fired me onwards a bit .

Didn't actually get very far with the work, got an A in AS mock Computer Science paper no revision so that gave me a boost after my D's in the other topics. I've been informed by my English, Politics and Economics teachers that I have the greatest knowledge of the set for examples and the topics yet just can't communicate them eloquently.

So I'm sort of getting there, but first couple of days back the motivation, or lack there of, didn't help!
