For anyone who hasn't noticed, go have a look on Apple.com and you can see flash demos of how the phone works. It may not be amazingly high specced in the camera department but it's ease of use and intuitive UI is certainly going to win fans.

It even has a face-proximity detector so you don't accidently press things with your cheek whilst talking!

Ingenious! Mind you if Apple installed a pretentious-git proximity detector then they would probably sell even fewer computers.....

(I'm just kidding Mac users.. there, there.. )

Yep thats a 20p heat sensor or a touch screen that picks up its being pressed in multiple places, thats old news.

I don't think they crack the wider market but they will probably get a good sell in the Apple market. Applieites are even getting excited over the way the company name has changed, that is pathetic fanboyism.

I remember way back when, they used to say how the Ipod would make Apple mainstream, that never happened. The Blackberry has the proper compatible Smart Phone market wrapped a while ago, they are also cheaper than this, but I am sure Appleites will ignore that.

The Ipod was a new market or rather capturing an infant market, this mobile phone is entering an established market place over 10 years old.

iPod has made Apple dominate the mobile player and tunage download service world...seems pretty mainstream to me. OK so their computers are still selling lopwer than PC's but this is mainly due to the windows brand and fear of incompatibility

looks very easy to use, not sure about the design and size, really have to hold it to know what i think for sure, but the UI seems very smart. altho being a phone seems to be secondary to being a touchscreen ipod.

I'd like to thank all the naysayers for providing me with reasons for not buying one, since at ($600+2yr high-cost contract)*UK markup it's way out of my priceband. I'm no Apple zealot, having owned Macs in the past and spent enough time cursing them (wrote my thesis on a Powerbook Duo - haha, what fun that was...), but after watching the UI demonstrations I have no doubt I'll be experiencing wish-fulfillment dreams involving stroking my albums' Coverflow (...). There is no disputing its coolness.

The only quibble is that reports from the Macworld floor are saying that it's a closed implementation, which is not so great.

And it did, in that the iPod is about as mainstream as it gets for a piece of electronics. Certainly, iPods didn't drag Mac computers into the mainstream as well, but that's what the name change is all about - Apple has realised that its appliances (iPod, iPhone, etc) are enough on their own to make the company mainstream.

Don't forget guys, this is the first design. Apple tend to refine them over time, so I think we'll see the iPhone really start to shine around 2009-2010.

Hopefully by then we'll be seeing 100GB+802.11n+whatever and looonger battery life and maybe in OLED displays (if not already).

Was just thinkin, where will phone designs go now? Theres so much designing you can do when you have to incoparate a large touch screen which fills up the whole front up the object. (and lets face it, all phones will have this within the next few years), so many concepts before the iPhone have used full screen touch screen systems, (i seem to remember a BenQ-Siemens one which looked scweet. So won't all phones look pretty much the same, apart from colour, size, and maybe where one or two buttons are placed?

Is it just me or does that sms interface look awful? Youd need to use a stylus to use it, as unless its absolutely humongous you wont fit your fingers on the buttons (full screen keyboard on a tytn is still too small)

All in all, name anything it can do that a Windows mobile phone cant do with better battery life and just as easily. (before anyone says anything you can get a media for wm5 that is basically a touchscreen ipod interface) WHen have you ever wanted to touch a screen in two places at once for gods sake?

As far as it running OSX goes, it could be running the kernel, just without whatever the gui part is called, its only linux after all.

In the american market (where phones seem to be about 3 years behind everyone else) its probably amazing, but i cant see too many people going for it over here, theres no compelling reason to do so.

I'm no apple fanboy, most apple fanboys hear know it.

But its not bad this, not bad at all, the multi-finger input system is good, as too if it works in the phone vertical hand held, well, the plebs like you and I will have to wait and see! Its still new in something this small, and they hopefully will of got a display with a very good viewing angle.

Questions i have are, battery life, and protection.

Its a mobile phone, it MUST have a good talk life, standby etc, i know most mac fan boys always end up sleeping in the same place every night, after not going out, but some of us have issues with their life, that they love jumping on a train, staying out all night somewhere new, and getting back home before monday... with enough battery life for a good chinwag on the way if need be. Will this do it?

Will it survive a clubbing? Next time your down turnmills, because you couldn't get into fabric, will it get scratched to buggery?

Also are they over hyping, they claim its revolutionary as a phone, to me that looks like second form, it dosen't look as thou it will be a pleasure to use (razer syndrome), and that is important for a mobile imo.

However, smart phones i like to be able to develope on, symbian is a terrible OS, thats why i'm running windows mobile 5 which has served me well, but it is very lacking OS that is like developing in the early 90s. BSD is better (OS X is a fancy BSD after all).

Now i don't for a second belive, or think it would be wise, that it would be an out of the box OS X. This will i'm guessing be a strong ARM port of the kernel. We will have to see how co-operative it is when an incoming call happens whilst ur playing a vid.

The easyest way to sum up my worries of it, is that in the metro, in the same paragraph they where talking about iTV (the set top box) with its amazing 40gig HDD, and no real HD support. In otherwords the sky+ box beats it hands down. If this fails as a phone, and as a PDA then its just an iPod with a gimic.

Hopefully it will be a new dawn for mobile phone interfaces, i love my tablet pc, but i do have two hands, with an amazing 5 digits each. Why have only one input at a time?

Who says you have to go to Turnmills just cause you didn't get into Fabric

I'm hoping it will be a new dawn to phones too and expecting to see a Vista phone out soon.

Trouble is they'll have to squeeze a Core2Duo in there as well as an 8800GTS

Thing is the interface still looks very formal, this is the one used by the stylus single touch interfaced phones too.

But when you look at what MS having, SIP nice. I've had a SIP client on my q-tech 8310 for quite some time now, thanks to MS lab's research project. quite useful.

Anyone know what the silicon on this is?

Far as i'm concerned it isn't that great for me. I can't fit all my music on the storage plus i'd rather have a dedicated mp3 player tbh. I text a lot and a purely touch screen input system i'm sure would piss me off.
I already have a phone which is probably easier to use and an ipod with more storage and if it was a toss up between this for like £400 plus 2 years of contract or a pda it would hardly be much of a contest.

Apple spread its legs and showed the world the iPhone. people with goatees fainted, and the silhouettes seemed to dance a little faster.

to be honest i like it. it could well kick start the resurrection of the PDA. and that has to be a good thing.
