While I detest the miserable chav, I suspect that she has the media smarts to turn this around - expect interviews in the trash mags where she bursts into tears over being called a racist, followed by half-hearted attempts to do charity work for black kids (remember the London Marathon?). No doubt her agent will ferret up a few non-white 'friends' who haven't seen her in years but will make her look like Nelson Mandela if the price is right.

I was listening to our local equivalent of Alan Partridge as he presented his BBC local radio phone-in show - the issues that matter in Herts, Beds, and Bucks - and fielded a call from some Doris that went as follows:

Doris: "I don't think it's racism, I think they are just jealous of her"

Alan: "That's right; because she is so pretty and elegant"

Doris: "Yes she is. Of course, they can be a very pretty race..."

Presumably as opposed to the various ugly races, so under-represented in the house this year

Other callers point out that because Jade is herself mixed race, she cannot conceivably be racist herself. As though racism is exclusively a white english issue, and the rest of the world is smothered with a blanket of uninterrupted harmony and universal love.

Dismissing these comments as merely the product of ignorance is simply affirming how deeply racism is ingrained among some sectors of British culture. If you grow up in a racist atmosphere and hear racial slurs every day you end up spouting them yourself without thinking anything about it. You don't need to tattoo yourself with swastikas to be a racist.

But this is not racism per se, she is not inferring that her race is superior in any way, this is more sterotyping.

Interesting that BigBrother last night had its 3rd highest viewing figures for the series - and from today probably 50 times more people know who Shilpa is. Will be interesting to see what the viewing figures for tonight are .
