I didn't want to hijack the Big Brother racism debate thread, but reading it reminded me of this cartoon I came across.
A few years ago, I was at my mum and stepdad's house, and I was idly reading through a box of general old stuff they'd got from a car boot sale. I happened upon a comic annual from 1954 called "Playbox" and read through it. I almost soiled myself when I saw this comic strip. I felt it had to be shared with the rest of the world, to have a glimpse at how children's comics over 50 years ago were handling the evolving ethnic diversity of our country. Not particularly well as I'm sure you will see. So anyway, I scanned it in and uploaded it.
I'll link this cartoon as a URL rather than an IMG, just in case someone gets offended or in trouble, because although it's quite evidently not hate literature, it does contain an amusingly shocking number of cartoon racial stereotypes.
As far as I know, this cartoon was not done by Jim Davidson, Bernard Manning or your Grandad.
You have been warned!

Obviously you are relying on 1950's cartoons to inform you as to what southerners are like...
