    Tech questions.

Since buying my American Wii I've had a few problems.

    1) I need a new TV.

My Wii plays perfectly - but in black and white. I bought both leads available (RGB scart and composite cable) and I have the same problem.

Now, it's not an issue, I know I need to upgrade, but does anyone know it works as it does? Is it a hz issue? Or maybe a NTSC/PAL issue? Just interested to know.

    2) I now need a Wireless internet router.

Can anyone recommend a decent, cheap one? My PC is upstairs and a room away.

    Cheers all,

The black and white does sound like your telly isnt NTSC compatible, but if it is, there may be a setting in the menus somewhere to change it to auto.

You could always sell your US wii and buy a uk one, probably cheaper than buying a new telly just for that.

With the TV in my bedroom I found that one of the scart sockets supports NTSC and the other doesnt. Guessing that you have tried all the connections ?

I've tried all leads/all sockets all combinations.

Is there a switch I can go through? I remember (I think) one of my friends going through a scart channel on a dvd player once which sorted a similar problem.

If not, I'll just get a new TV (it's a good excuse, and if you buy a standard TV ie not plasma or LCD the prices are extremely low at the moment)

The RGB Scart would only be useful (for having colours) if you had an RGB Scart socket on your TV (which by the sounds of it, you don't).

Most TVs that have 2 SCART sockets will have 1 RGB scart socket.

And for wireless routers, perhaps you can find a cheap WPA (Wireless Access Point) to add to your current router? May save a few pennies? (though I have no idea how much these things are anyway!)

The TV I use at the mo has two scart sockets in the back. One plays in black and white the other in red and black.

It's a NTSC issue I'm presuming then? Oh well new TV time

Yes it's NTSC, the PAL/NTSC bit is to do with the transmission of colour more than anything, as they're not compatible you're getting no colour. A newer TV would probably detect the signal and switch on its own.

The Red + Black bit sounds interesting though, AFAIK you should be fine using RGB, the fact it's showing Red suggests that there's a fault in the Green & Blue connections.
If you have a Sky box you can test if it's the TV by going to the Sky System/Picture menu and changing it from PAL to RGB with it plugged into that socket.

Try wobbling the wires a bit. It can happen with monitors.
    With love and many thanks,

Check through your TV's menu settings for input options on the SCART sockets, you never know, you might get lucky and be able to switch it to NTSC.

If it's a 50/60 Hz issue, you should see jaggy white lines at the top and bottom of the screen too.

If it can't do 60Hz then the timing would be out and the whole picture would be screwed up. A 50/60Hz signal from the UK or US will display fine in B&W on a TV that handles both speeds regardless of PAL/NTSC signal, the colour layer however is dependant on the support of both systems.

@Nick: You got me thinking with your post, I'd forgotten that the US don't use SCART, it's a Europe-only thing, so quite what happens when you put a SCART in a NTSC console is anyone's guess!
