Question Is it possible to rent high-end cameras?

Not video camcorders but high end digital ones like a 350D SLR or something (not some silly OMFG£2000 camera)? There's a 50/50 chance I will be privately meeting Timbaland, Justin Timberlake and a few others this year and I want to use something better than the grimey little 2mp pocket digital camera I have. Pic quality is fairly nice but just not good enough. This is a lifetime opportunity for me so I want to capture it forevars!

I may be an art student but I can't use a student loan till I get into Uni this year, which is after the meet opportunity. I may be up for buying a digital SLR though once I get into Uni, although my main thing will be Illustration so who knows - so this will be a good experience point for me.

Thanks and apologies if I'm just being blonde ;p

I'm sure there are places that rent cameras, have you tried asking around in town (i dunno, somewhere like Jessops might do it)?

I guess you'd have to hire the lenses as well - but that shouldn't be a problem

I'm only getting one guest pass which means I can't even bring a mate! If you could trust me to handle the cam though I would be eager to pay for a tiny bit of rentage

I'm in East London, easy reach into central within half an hour or less.

There are places that rent (or used to last time I looked), such as KJP (Calumet, I think they now call themselves), but it used to be fairly high-end gear (rather higher than you're talking about).

But have you thought about second-hand?

I know someone that recently sold an Olympus E-10, and currently has a friend that is probably having his Olympus E-20P, which replaced the E-10. Both are damn good cameras, of a FAR higher build quality than the likes of the Canon 350 (as they were in the £1500 plus bracket, when new), and tend to go for a song, largely because they're 4 Megapixel or 5 Megapixel, and you can get much higher than that now).

And that begs the question of what can be done with 6MP, 8MP or even 10MP that can't be done with 5MP? Answer = actually, not much, other than VERY large prints (i.e. A3 or larger).

Obviously, you need to be careful if buying second hand cameras, as with anything, and you don't have the comfort of a shop warranty or much in the way of consumer protection, but on the other hand, people upgrading to higher resolution models means theres a glut of very good condition cameras capable of high quality results around, if you are selective in what you buy, and careful to check it out before parting with money.

Anyway, it's a thought for you.
