Heh...Clunk's post is the best...is that my little pony? Gosh scary I know that...!

Yes, a $20 Quartz watch will out perform any mechanical watch, but say it's calibrated to +2secs, in a couple months time, it'll STILL keep that +2secs.

However a mechanical watch will vary depending on temp and gravity, i.e. here's the COSC cert. I got for my Seamaster,

So even if it is off today, in a couple months, i could deviate ± around that point, which could be good/or bad.

However, to be purely functional, a CPB (cheap black plastic) can not be beat.

OTOH it seem that the general census here is "why drive 'nice' cars, enjoy fine liquors when the regular 4 wheel kind or the 'unbranded' whiskey gets the job done". Again, it is all down to a matter of taste I guess, and some people find pleasure in these 'eccentric' ways of life.

"why you're so infatuated with them"...

Until October '06 I only owned two watches, both Tissots which were gifts to me from my Parents, even though I've always been fascinated with watch movements and the 'engineering' that goes into creating these mechanical marvels.

Since then the collection has grown and I'm favouring the pieces by Omega specially the Sea/Speedmasters. Looking at pictures etc will not mean anything, until you hold one in the palm of your hand - if you are still convinced that 'they suck', to each his own ofc.

...chances are you'll leave the store thinking it over.

I agree with Bsod as he makes a good point, its not like hes showing off, he just has a passion for expensive things which happen to be wristwatches and if you think about it they are a marvel of enginuity all the small mechanics.

Sometimes I used to wonder about how they managed to make watches, I'm impressed by such things and in a VERY obvious way they are works of art.

The hand made watches obviously take a lot of skill, time and patience to pull off, something you just don't see in today's art

Got to take my hat off to that logic; my watch is more accurate but I've probably set it incorrectly, and though the accuracy of your watch varies randomly it will occasionally stumble upon the correct time

Tell you what, why don't you stop winding it altogether so that it will definitely tell you the correct time twice every day

1/100 second. And it lights up too.

(as it goes I'm very anal about my watches and set them according to a radio-controlled G-shock I have, that is sadly knackered. Should have bought 15 throwaway casios instead for the same money...)

    Hi Preston,

Ok maybe I was a bit unclear - after an extended period of time a mechanical watch, in most cases, will be off and that is why many owners tend to send them back for regulation if they find it to be 'drastically' off.

That said, if you sync a quartz watch (be it a cheapish Casio to an expensive one) to an atomic clock, such as wwp.greenwichmeantime.com, you will find that it will be accurate to ± 0.5s quite easily.

So my point here is that, as far as being accurate, getting the job done, not costing more than a music CD - ofc you can not beat a quartz (well them turbillons could be quite accurate), however that is not the reason why people enjoy owning [in comparison, expensive] mechanical watches, vintage automobiles, expensive *cough* pens etc etc.

That said, another one of my 'obsessions' is to collect Montblanc pens; I simply love the design, and the nib on the 149 is absolutely gorgeous...

...but it's important to note, to each his own

On another topic, which quite a few of you will probably at I ordered two Bond NATO straps off eBay. For those of you who don't know this strap was issued to 007 in Goldfinger and here's an example image of it on a different Seamaster,

..and on Seiko, the proper Bond NATO,

The irony here is that we have a v. nice watch on a cheapish $15 strap. Yesterday I swapped out my bracelet in favour of the NATO and am extremely pleased - not only is it lighter, it is also 'dressed down' as I felt that the basket weaved Seamaster bracelet looked a bit too ostentatious.

But it's each to his own.

I don't drink much, but I am partial to a decent whisky, and even more to a good brandy. For instance, you'll usually find me with a bottle or two of Couvoisier Napoleon in stock, and it's about £65-70 a bottle.

But ..... I don't drink much, so it lasts a good, long time. And it's not the brandy I drag out for any old guests, especially the (shudder) brandy-and-coke-please types. And when the urge for a tipple does hit me, I like something I really like.

So £150 for a bottle of scotch wouldn't deter me, IF it was what I really liked.

I'm also rather partial to sake. And like whisky, it comes in quality ranging from -yummy to -yuck. I look for daiginjo sake, and my normal tipple is about £35 a bottle ..... in the UK.

Each to his own. Some like nice watches, some like good whisky, some like night-clubbing. Some people seem to love 18-30 holidays, but you couldn't pay me enough to get me to share a holiday with a bunch of semi-permanently plastered lager-loving tweenagers. The very thought makes my skin crawl. But give me a nice quiet villa, preferably on the beach, some decent books, good local restaurants and a decent range of local museums and/or galleries, and I'm happy.

    Each to his own.

I would just point out that that "retired" bit refers to from the Hexus team. It was changed when I left the team, so as to give people a hint that there was not much point PMing me to get their name changed, etc.

    I guess it's time I changed the title ..... so I have.
